Sometimes I question Court decisions.......(re-rapist)

I read this short story in todays paper, but its enough, as well as others I hear, to make me question why jail sentance is never permanent.

************
A RAPIST who escaped from his guard during a prison outing battered a woman with a brick in a ladies’ toilet.

Neil Trennan, 38 — who has convictions for similar attacks — smashed lecturer Sally Rust-Andrews on the head in the loo at her college after “losing” the escort on a shopping trip.

Cops are convinced he intended to rape her after knocking her out. But he panicked and fled when his victim, aged around 30, screamed for help. He was caught an hour later.

Trennan is serving life at Norfolk’s Wayland Jail for raping a woman he KO’d with a weight-lifting dumbbell in 1991.

The brick attack was in June on his second Norwich outing.

He got a second life term at the city’s crown court after admitting GBH with intent.

**************

now, Im daft, so can someone whos smart explain why these type of pple are allowed a day-out?

and some arent even given life, and are fit to stike again, as u know............

Sentence #1 states that he escaped from prison.

Melon

I'm amazed--and impressed--that rapists are even given life sentences in Ireland (I assume this is where this incident happened?). Here are some stats about rape here in the U.S., from RAINN (Rape Abuse & Incest National Network www.rainn.org):

Every two minutes, somewhere in America, someone is sexually assaulted.

RAINN calculation based on 2000 National Crime Victimization Survey. Bureau of Justice Statistics, U.S. Department of Justice.

In 2001, there were 249,000 victims of rape, attempted rape or sexual assault. [2000 National Crime Victimization Survey. Bureau of Justice Statistics.]

Of these 249,000, 102,000 were victims of sexual assault, 63,000 were victims of attempted rape, and 84,000 were victims of completed rape. [2000 NCVS.]

Because of the methodology of the National Crime Victimization Survey, these figures do not include victims 12 or younger. While there are no reliable annual surveys of sexual assaults on children, the Justice Department has estimated that one of six victims are under age 12. [Child Rape Victims, 1992]

Since 1993, rape/sexual assault has fallen 52%.

The punishment:

61% of rapes/sexual assaults are not reported to the police. Those rapists, of course, never serve a day in prison. [1999 NCVS]
If the rape is reported to police, there is a 50.8% chance that an arrest will be made.

If an arrest is made, there is an 80% chance of prosecution.

If there is a prosecution, there is a 58% chance of a felony conviction.

If there is a felony conviction, there is a 69% chance the convict will spend time in jail.

So, even in the 39% of attacks that are reported to police, there is only a 16.3% chance the rapist will end up in prison.

Factoring in unreported rapes, about 6% of rapists—1 out of 16— will ever spend a day in jail. 15 out of 16 will walk free.

[Probability statistics compiled by NCPA from US Department of Justice statistics. See www.ncpa.org/studies/s229/s229.html]

Those stats are sick. Rape is one of the most horrible crimes, and I think America should follow in Ireland's footsteps in terms of prison sentences.

Joyful and UltraVio....sweeties...sorry, Norfolk is in England.......

I just think he was given the life as he was charged and admitted the GBH.......

however, when I hear stories of rapists who walk free after certain number of years, then strike again.............Im unimpressed why they arent given life when its obvious they will strike again.

my mate thinks its to free up a prison cell!!!!!!!!!!!!!
