I know it's legal in Germany and Amsterdam. In Nevada brothels are legal in certain areas. Prostitution has been around for Thousands of years, why not make it legal finally here in the states?

It would bring down STD infections and it would also bring in money for Local, State and Federal taxes. It would also bring down the Slave Sex Trade.

The woman or men would have to submit to weekly STD checks and there should be a set limit on the number of sex business there are in the city or state.

What are your opinions?

and no I have never had sex with a prostitute or gone to a brothel.

No.

Murder has been around forever, but that doesn't give it grounds for legalization.

let each state decide.

most of the negative social effects of prostitution are due precisely to it's criminal status.

Maybe I'm just hearing you wrong, but allowing prostitution wouldn't bring down STD infections, it would just continue to spread them! Unless you're talking about said prostitutes opening up an actual business office where people can walk in and have sex. But still I think it's a bad idea. Because then children and teenagers will think that since it's legal that they can just go out and sleep around with whoever they want to, whenever they want to.

And weekly STD checks for the "business" employees could just cost more money, plus it would be a hinderance to them to go to the doctor every week and pay co-pay.

Just a thought....

why be allowed to pay for sex when you can just as easily spend a few thousand dollars wine-ing and dining your girlfriend to come to the same result?

prostituion could be legal... if it's strictly regulated and 100% consentual it's really not hurting anyone, per say... but you'll never see it done in this lifetime or the next. much like marijuana. no one wants to be the first to campaign for it.

(yes i stole that from a seinfeld episode... leave me alone :madspit: )

that, and sometimes, you get wined and dined.

and, sometimes, you don't want to bother with either dinner or wine.

If anyone is interested in the subject, there's a very good book called Brothel: Mustang Ranch and Its Women by Alexa Albert, which explores all sorts of angles on the legalized prostitution industry in Nevada.

Lives of the prostitutes, the ongoing campaigns to ban legalized prostitution, the business itself. Really, really interesting.

Actually the spread of disease where legal or even here where's it's illegal is very small amongst prostitution.

Since the late 80's, education has made drastic changes to the pay for sex industry. I watched a documentary on prostitution here in the states, and even when unregulated the women require a condom for everything, even oral sex.

It's not about "allowing" prostitution per se, but about making it legal. Prostitution exists whether or not it's legal. Making it legal, though, would turn it into a business with rules & regulations. AND would protect those women (and men) who decide to do this as a business. Making it legal (giving prostitutes status as working individuals with legal recourse, etc.) = no more pimps.
So, yes, a "business office" like you said. If you think about it, having sex with a legal prostitute, then, might be safer than having sex with someone you just met in a bar...

Jeez. I'm so sick of everyone making everything "about the chillllllldren."

Um, kids have sex now whether you or I or anyone likes it or not. Sex is sex, folks. And whether Kid A has sex with Kid B or a prostitue doesn't make it any less awkward or terrifying or what have you (remember the first, or even 10th, time you had sex as a teenager?)

Our problem with teenagers having sex in this country (and then getting pregnant or getting diseases, etc.) isn't because of sex or porn or whatever being out there. It's "nature/hormones" PLUS the added bonus of our society being so oversexed but so puritanical at the same time. Sex is all over tv (um, Paris Hilton's ridiculous burger ad, anyone?) but we're all so freaked out about talking honestly about sex...and that's where we get into trouble.

Legalized prostitution won't happen in this country (except outside of Vegas) because of our problems with being open about sex. But if it did, it would open up a discourse on the REAL birds & bees. And that just freaks people out.

Consider the fee a part of their business expenses. We buy uniforms or special electronics or what have you for our jobs...prostitutes would have to pony up the $$ for weekly or monthly tests (they do monthly test, IIRC, outside of Vegas). Also, I've heard the money is good :) You make that kind of money, and going to the doctor every month is just a small annoyance but worth it. You have to prove that you're clean to get more customers/make more money. It would just be part o f the cost of doing business.

It would also add tax revenue to cities and states.

So, yeah, I'm all for it.
It never made sense to me that I could go pick up some random guy (or twelve) and have sex with him and walk away...but the minute I took cab fare from him for the same I'd be a criminal.

Sorry? But who's rights are being trampled by legalised prostitution?

The prostitute is allowed to sell her (or his) services and the client is able to have the freedom to go out and pay for no-commitment gratification. There are a good many problems that surround prostitution but I think that is more of a correlatation than a direct causation.

Having an open sex industry is good, if you keep it illegal then it is only going to be run by criminals and sex workers have much fewer protections.

Sex + Free Market =

Yes, legalize it. Then the prostitutes won't get busted and they can do it above board, so to speak. They won't have to hide, it's been around forever, why not?

Would you like prostitutes on your streetcorner?

do you see guys bootlegging moonshine on your street corner?

the legalization of prostitution doesn't mean that it would make what street walkers and pimps do legal. it means that the sale of sexual acts would be legal, regulated, and it would, in fact, bring it off the streets, effectively putting the criminal element of prostitution out of business.

I actually tend to agree. I think the reason many of us don't want prositution legalized is that by keeping it illegal we are somehow showing our Official Societal Disapproval of prostitution. Of course there are other things that we disapprove of in our society that are not illegal such as adultery and (for some of us anyway) smoking and drinking alcohol.

To me when we argue, "we can't have this be legal otherwise everyone will do it," we reveal the shaky foundation on which our sense of morality stands.
