Sheriff tells staffer to marry, move or quit!

WASHINGTON -- When Sheriff Carson Smith of Pender County, North Carolina, found out that Deborah Hobbs, a recently hired emergency dispatcher, was unmarried and "living in sin," he gave her a choice.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't the dark ages end a thousand years ago or so????

yeah, because whether a person is married or not impacts how well a dispatcher can perform her job duties.

Quote:
...the Family Research Council, a conservative Christian group that's behind efforts for a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, is four-square behind the 1805 North Carolina statute.

"We should have these laws because the law is a teacher. It teaches us what is right and wrong," said Bridget Maher, an analyst at the council. "These laws teach us that cohabitation is not good for couples and for society. Cohabiting relationships are often unstable and they have higher levels of domestic violence."
the only thing this law teaches us is the values the law-makers in the 1800s held. how surprising, co-habitation was frowned upon in the 19th century. we've since instituted a charter of rights that prohibits discrimination on the basis of marital status, ethnicity, etc. maybe this group should think about what that law teaches us.

This reminds me of a recent story I read about a pastor who kicked all the democrats out of his church.

It's getting weirder and weirder. Pharmacists who refuse to fill birth control prescriptions, but who hand out Viagra hand over fist.

One of the good things about dying is that you don't have to be around to watch things go totally to shit. The problem is that the process of going to shit seems to be in fast-forward, so I might not die in time to miss it.

I live in NC and it's a big thing around here. I know of two people who were fired for "living in sin", which was living as an unmarried couple. Know of one other who hides his relationship. They have a few other screwed up rules too, can't remember though, have to ask hubby.

Okay i'll correct you , YOU'RE WRONG!!!! . The Middle Ages ended about 550 to 450 years ago

From Wikipedia :

The Middle Ages of Western Europe are commonly dated from the end of the Western Roman Empire (5th century) until the rise of national monarchies, of European overseas exploration, the discovery and diffusion of printing, and the humanist revival of the Renaissance in the 15th century in Italy, early 16th century in Northern Europe

(I just couldn't resist)

Please don't think that everyone in the south is like this man or that southern people agree with his stupid behavior. There are a lot of well educated people in the south who understand more than anyone, threats to civil rights.
