Secretly Taped Bush Conversations

Now I don't agree at all w/ secretly taping anyone like that but I can't resist reading this, some interesting stuff-well, maybe interesting only to me

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/02/20/po...rtner=homepage

"As George W. Bush was first moving onto the national political stage, he often turned for advice to an old friend who secretly taped some of their private conversations, creating a rare record of the future president as a politician and a personality.

In the last several weeks, that friend, Doug Wead, an author and former aide to Mr. Bush's father, disclosed the tapes' existence to a reporter and played about a dozen of them.

Variously earnest, confident or prickly in those conversations, Mr. Bush weighs the political risks and benefits of his religious faith, discusses campaign strategy and comments on rivals."

Because of gems like this
Quote:
Early on, though, Mr. Bush appeared most worried that Christian conservatives would object to his determination not to criticize gay people. “I think he wants me to attack homosexuals,” Mr. Bush said after meeting James Robison, a prominent evangelical minister in Texas.

But Mr. Bush said he did not intend to change his position. He said he told Mr. Robison: “Look, James, I got to tell you two things right off the bat. One, I’m not going to kick gays, because I’m a sinner. How can I differentiate sin?”

Later, he read aloud an aide’s report from a convention of the Christian Coalition, a conservative political group: “This crowd uses gays as the enemy. It’s hard to distinguish between fear of the homosexual political agenda and fear of homosexuality, however.”

“This is an issue I have been trying to downplay,” Mr. Bush said. “I think it is bad for Republicans to be kicking gays.”

Told that one conservative supporter was saying Mr. Bush had pledged not to hire gay people, Mr. Bush said sharply: “No, what I said was, I wouldn’t fire gays.”
This isn't in relation to the ban on gay marriage or any number of other policies which people are rightly angry at ~ this is just to point out that there is no smoking gun in the tapes.

Oh my God. You have got to be fucking kidding me. I swear this administration is taking it's cues from Orwell. Classic doublespeak.

There are a few things I am wondering today.

#1) Did the White House approve this? (I am leaning yes)
#2) Why? What do they have to gain by it?

Maybe the WH wants to lay the groundwork for a future in comedy-didn't you hear his impression of Al Gore?

Inoculate Bush from having to answer questions about drug use i. e. cocaine use.

Inoculate Bush from having to answer questions about his past.

There has been talk that he is responsible for an abortion. You may recall that Laura told him she was done.
And then he “got saved”, and promised to get on the straight and narrow.

These “supposed” personal conversations reveal a compassionate, thinking individual.

His supporters will now say, OK he smoked pot. Big deal. He does not want to talk about his mistakes and set a bad example for children.

Quote:
John McCain "will wear thin," he predicted.
I remember during the 2000 primaries when McCain had an early lead. A reporter asked W what he thought. W said it is no big deal, I did not have to get the nomination, I have plenty of things to do in Texas. He practically conceded.
His campaign then went to S. C. and the South and with a dirty campaign pulled it out.

Do any of you believe for one minute this stuff would dare be leaked if it did not serve the agenda of the administration.

Is there any proof it was leaked by the administration??

I think a lot of liberals are having a hard time swallowing that these conversations don't fit the caricature they've made of Bush.
