I think, if nothing else, the transcripts show an imperfect man attempting to think on his own, and that goes a long way toward blunting the criticism that he's a dumbass who's prone to be swayed by all these evil neo-cons and the religious right people that surround him.

That's why the transcripts won't hurt at all. If Abu Gharib, false justification for invading Iraq, and the ballooning deficit couldn't knock him outta office, a little transcript that shows he wants to be right (or righteous) surely isn't going to have big negative impacts.

It remains to be seen if this story is planted or okayed by the WH. Given the recent use of "fake journalists" to manipulate the media discourse and public opinion, i would not be surprised at all. The WH hardly has any credibility left...except to the converted.

I don't see this helping his approval ratings at all among people who already disapprove

All it does for me is reinforce how he tries to play it safe politically

I didn't previously think he never did drugs or hates gay people.

I think he's the new Teflon president, so none of it matters anyway.

Quote:
Mr. Bush said : "Look, James, I got to tell you two things right off the bat. One, I'm not going to kick Jews, just because they are not saved, I used to be a sinner. How can I differentiate sin?"

Later, he read aloud an aide's report a conservative political group: "This crowd uses Jews as the enemy. It's hard to distinguish between fear of the Jewish political agenda and fear of Jews, however."

"This is an issue I have been trying to downplay," Mr. Bush said. "I think it is bad for Republicans to be kicking Jews."

It seems to me that GWB has some decent impulses but in the long run he lets people with absolutely no decency sway him.

I am not sure how this innoculates him from questions about drug use!

When was the last time you heard of a reporter bringing this up?

He is the President and it is not an issue.

If the White House lhad this leaked, there has to be a bigger political agenda than this. Sorry....but it sounds like you are grasping at straws.

Even if he did use marijuana some twenty years ago, John Kerry and Al Gore have both admitted to past use of it. I'd sure like a drug-free candidate if I had the option.

I'm leaning leak with approval. It was a way to take away the bad headlines of Korea, Russia & Syria/Iran, and put out something for the reporters to talk about instead. They always take personal stories over hard news (aka Scott Peterson). What harm can it possibly do? He's not running again. It is an attempt to portray him as a moderate, HA

Did you ever think, that he is a maderate? He was in Iowa and New Hampshire before he lost to McCain.

He was pushed to the right for political purposes, winning the nomination. He had to stay there for obvious reasons, the next election.

If it were leaked could this be an attempt to move back to the center?

Very possibly. Afterall he has mentioned raising the cap for SS.
It could also be a feint in that direction. I really don't see him as a moderate even though that was he portraying based on his Texas record.
