Let's start this thread on a good note. A very good note.

New Zealand has just become the thirteenth country to legalise marriage equality. Parliament voted decisively, 77-44: Marriage Equality Bill Passes Parliamentary Vote | Stuff.co.nz

I am so, so proud of my country right now. Our history of being a progressive, decent country isn't dead yet. Fucking great stuff, everybody.

Fantastic news, but christ it makes our government look absolutely pathetic. The saddest part is when the opposition takes over in September it will mean we are at the very least three years away from legalising it, more likely six and probably about a decade.

Fuck you Trevor Chappell.

once again, New Zealand is the Canada of the antipodes.

I had no idea such common decency existed at the higher echelon of the National Party, but Maurice Williamson's proved me wrong. Excellent speech. I guess he has now upstaged Chris Auchinvole, who came from nowhere to make a bit of a sensation with his speech on the second reading:

Boy Scouts proposing to lift gay ban for youth

ok, this is kind of what I thought might happen

no fag leaders, but when kids start scouting at 8 years old, they are just kids
what happens if they are top-notch scouts and then at 14, 15 , 16 they end up gay?

well, if they obey the scout motto along with their straight scout friends and remain morally chaste, no foul, no harm.

it's not nice to kick a kid out that has been in for years

Scout Oath

On my honor I will do my best
To do my duty to God and my country
and to obey the Scout Law;
To help other people at all times;
To keep myself physically strong,
mentally awake, and morally straight.

The Meaning of the Boy Scout Law

Excerpted from page 47-54, Boy Scout Handbook, 11th Edition,
(#33105), copyright 1998 by BSA, ISBN 0-8395-3105-2

A Scout is Trustworthy.
A Scout tells the truth. He is honest, and he keeps his promises. People can depend on him.
A Scout is Loyal.
A Scout is true to his family, friends, Scout leaders, school, and nation.
A Scout is Helpful.
A Scout cares about other people. He willingly volunteers to help others without expecting payment or reward.
A Scout is Friendly.
A Scout is a friend to all. He is a brother to other Scouts. He offers his friendship to people of all races and nations, and respects them even if their beliefs and customs are different from his own.
A Scout is Courteous.
A Scout is polite to everyone regardless of age or position. He knows that using good manners makes it easier for people to get along.
A Scout is Kind.
A Scout knows there is strength in being gentle. He treats others as he wants to be treated. Without good reason, he does not harm or kill any living thing.
A Scout is Obedient.
A Scout follows the rules of his family, school, and troop. He obeys the laws of his community and country. If he thinks these rules and laws are unfair, he tries to have them changed in an orderly manner rather than disobeying them.
A Scout is Cheerful.
A Scout looks for the bright side of life. He cheerfully does tasks that come his way. He tries to make others happy.
A Scout is Thrifty.
A Scout works to pay his own way and to help others. He saves for the future. He protects and conserves natural resources. He carefully uses time and property.
A Scout is Brave.
A Scout can face danger although he is afraid. He has the courage to stand for what he thinks is right even if others laugh at him or threaten him.
A Scout is Clean.
A Scout keeps his body and mind fit and clean. He chooses the company of those who live by high standards. He helps keep his home and community clean.
A Scout is Reverent.
A Scout is reverent toward God. He is faithful in his religious duties. He respects the beliefs of others.

atheists need not apply, and that is fine, this is an opt in group,

They're thinking about allowing a conscience vote though. Cynics say that's the LNP's way of getting more votes from the undecideds (and that's probably true) but if would still be nice. Then soft cocks like Turnbull and O'Dwyer could cross the floor, without actually crossing it, so to speak.

I'm still outraged that Turnbull, et al. did not cross the floor last year. Moral cowards.

Still, we might have some states passing gay marriage this year. NSW's premier, Barry O'Farrell, generally seems like a bit of a twunt but good on him for allowing the state Libs a conscience vote on this issue.

Really great speech by the French Minister of Justice upon passage of the new law:

Tonight, we would especially like to speak to the adolescents in our country – boys and girls – who have been hurt during this debate. We speak to those children who found themselves in the midst of deep and frightening chaos. They discovered a society where a wave of selfishness led many to loudly protest against the rights of others.

We simply want to tell these adolescents that they are at home in our society.

We recognize them in this society. We recognize their contradictions, talents, shortcomings, qualities and fragility. These are the things that make each and every one of us unique. Regardless of any sexual issues, each one of us is unique. That is the strength of our society. It is even the basis of our society. It is the basis of our relationship to society. So we tell these adolescents: if you find yourself losing hope, sweep all of those thoughts out of your minds. They are only words. One day they will float away. Stay with us and keep your heads high. You have nothing to be ashamed of. We say that loud and clear, with our all the strength in our voices. As Nietzsche said: Truth kills. And if you repress it, it will kill you.

Thank you all.

Amid Much Tumult, France Approves ‘Marriage for All’

Given the occasion let me suggest to the socialist French Minster of Justice a more apropos Nietzsche quote regarding "la vérité."

“Nothing is true, all is permitted”

The world spins in moral nihilism. Yea!!

Do you think you're more moral than me always and in all ways?
