All that says to me is that they think it's preferable for kids to grow up in highly dysfunctional and abusive families, as long as they are the biological parents, and one of each gender.

Do people really think kids first learn about sex in sex ed classes anyway? Not to get into an argument on morals (really beginning to hate that word) desensitizing our country and making us used to more graphic sexual content in our eery day lives, or saying that five year olds should be shown porn or anything crazy like that, but if they don't teach that stuff til 8th grade like my middle school did, there's no way it's nothing they don't already know about it by the time they get to those classes. And it's not like it's difficult to figure the rest out if they're only taught about heterosexual intercourse. Or are we just pretending gay people don't exist as well? Oh, son, that kid who was teasing you at shook who called you a fudgepacker was actually just saying you're fat because you eat too much fudge...yeah, that's what he meant.

It is hilarious that some parents are doing everything they can to shelter their kids. Granted, I understand some of it. Who wants to tell a 5 year old what oral sex is? But then again, it is best to tell them because we are in a more sex saturated world, thanks to the Internet. You have kids checking out porn at age 8. It's sad but its true.

But as the kids get older, it is foolish and silly to fight hard to shelter them. I know this one woman who tries to monitor what her teens read, lest they read an explicit sex scene. Sigh. I was reading scenes like that in high school and even junior high. Heck, When I was 12, I was watching explicit R rated movies late at night when my parents thought I was watching cartoons. I learned a lot about sex that way, and no, I did not run out and had sex with 100 guys. The idea of informing your kid or having kids know what sex really is would automatically lead to promiscuity is ridiculous. Teach them self-respect and responsibility and then they'll be OK.

What are the odds Australia legalizes it this year?

Absolutely zero. A more conservative govt than the one we have now will take over in September. It'll be at least three, more likely 6+ years sadly. Unless conservatives have a change of heart, or come to their senses a la David Cameron.

His last words were "hohn hohn hohn" as he twisted his pencil moustache and fended off would-be rescuers with a fresh baguette

I like that he fears the invasion of Sharia Law and gay marriage, as if they are at all compatible.

I can think of people in the US who fear both.

This. We're completely fucked in September.

That said, it is possible - maybe even probable - that an Australian state will legalise gay marriage this year. That will lead to a very interesting case in the courts. Whether or not a state can legalise gay marriage has not been tested, and constitutional law experts have conflicting opinions. I fear it would be struck down, but we'll see...
