Indeed.

I guarantee we wouldn't hear a peep from INDY if a judge made a decision that came down on the side of pro-life.

Whether it's the deficit, the national debt, the constitution, the courts, whatever the thing that irritates me from the right is the hypocritical sanctimony.

here's the part of the ruling that i find really interesting:

Quote:
"Tradition alone, however, cannot form an adequate justification for a law....The 'ancient lineage” of a classification does not render it legitimate....Instead, the government must have an interest separate and apart from the fact of tradition itself."

that guts the whole "because i said so" argument.

That should gut the "redefining marriage" argument too, which is nothing more than, "It's always been this way!"

I don't understand how people can think the idea that a mindset/way of life that worked x number of years ago is perfectly okay to emulate today is a viable argument for anything.

And tradition in and of itself isn't always bad and worth respecting sometimes, but my god, people, at some point we have to move on and try something new. Just saying "it's tradition!" isn't enough, you kind of have to prove WHY the tradition must continue.

Maryland Senate approves bill allowing same-sex marriage

Los Angeles Times | Feb. 23, 2012 | 4:41 p.m.

The Maryland Senate passed a bill today that would allow same-sex marriage. Gov. Martin O'Malley is likely to sign the legislation soon, making Maryland the eighth state to allow same-sex couples to marry.

Opponents of gay marriage have vowed to force a public vote on the issue in November.

i don't know what to think on this. if it's another 51/49 split or so, like in CA or ME, are we set back 10 years?

it just seems shocking that anyone is voting on rights, especially when you're talking about a small population of people (5%). how do you get more than 50% of people to care?

My hope is that
The world spins forward
And these backward people lose all their referendums

It’s exactly what I read throughout scripture: Jesus hanging out with people that religious people would flee from.
Bingo. Though, thankfully, I do know of many religious people who would join Jesus in that activity.

Interesting idea. I like the apology part the best, especially if it involves people apologizing for their misconceptions of gay people. I like that people seem genuinely touched by such things, says a lot about the crap they likely had to put up with in the past that a simple "I'm sorry" can move them so.

So, after the approval of the same-sex marriage in 2010, this week it was discussed the adoption by same-sex couples.
Since we now have a majority of right-wing, it was obviously rejected.

But that's not the main issue.
Our legislation allows a gay man or a gay woman to adopt a child (in fact, our Constitution expressly forbids any kind of discrimination based in sexual orientation).
...But if this gay man/woman is married with another... That couple isn't allowed to adopt.
I call this hipocrisy.

It didn't surprise me that the right-wing majority rejected the proposal. In fact 10 of the 108 deputees of PPD/PSD (social-conservative/economic-liberal, but self-called social-democratic ) and 1 of the 24 deputees of CDS-PP (Popular[populist]-party) approved it (that. yes, surprised me positevely).
It didn't either that half of the 74 Third-Way/social-democratic (self-called Socialist Party) rejected it.
[The 8 deputees of the Left Bloc (neo-socialism) that presented the project voted for it]

What surprised me more was the rejection of all the 16 ommunist deputees... That had voted for the same-sex marriage 2 years ago.

Anyway, there's news that Rajoy, the new right-wing Prime-Minister of Spain wants to eliminate the same-sex marriage law approved (I think) in 2005... Just like he did with the abortion law 2 months ago, right when he reached the power.

The good news is that Sarkozy will probably lose April's elections to the (pseudo-)socialists and Hollande said that he wants to go on with same-sex marriage law in France.

They're out there, but they're not talking. Hopefully, this is a step towards one day having openly gay professional athletes and no one caring what they do in the bedroom, but how they perform on the court, ice, field.

Nevertheless, good on these NHL hockey players for this:

G and Hartsy! I love how many Philly athletes have done these things. I know the Phils did one for the It Gets Better jaunt that included Utley, Pence and Halladay.
