"I made this sandwich 10 years ago. When I took a bite out of it, I saw a face looking up at me; it was Virgin Mary starring (sic) back at me. I was in total shock; I would like to point out there is no mould or (disintegration)," Duyser said.

She said the sandwich, preserved in a plastic box, has brought her "blessings."

"I have won $US70,000 ($A90,700) (total) on different occasions at the casino nearby my house; I can show the receipts (sic) to the high bidder," Duyser said.

no no

look closer, i am sure it is mary

it looks just like the photo on the passport
she used when vacationing at the red sea

I think it's a little bit of both...

I wouldn't even know what Mary looked like. Was she burnette, redhead, blonde? I'm sure someone has an old photo, right?

All I do know is that Jesus had some great abs.

ok, since we brought it up...Jesus lived in the middle east...he AND mary were both likely rather dark/olive skinned with dark hair and dark eyes....

deep,

Is this thread a commentary on our eBay culture, or a commentary on the veneration of Mary?

1. I don't visit ebay

2. It shoud have been Jesus' face, I have seen lots of images of him. He kind of looks like a surfer, with the long hair and facial hair.

What I really think?

Is that this cheese sandwich is as valid as the "Shroud of Turin"

....and the winner is....

an online gaming casino based in canada.

http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/rss/10249134.htm?1c

Put a fork in it.

Diana Duyser's ''Virgin Mary'' grilled cheese sandwich is done.

Sold, as of 8:22 p.m. Monday, for $28,000 on eBay.

The lucky winner? GoldenPalace.com, an online casino whose executives say they were willing to spend ''as much as it took'' to own the 10-year-old half sandwich with a bite out of it.

what does an online casino want with a virgin mary cheese sandwich?

It can't be considered a relic. Relics are parts of a saint's body or a piece of clothing, or something else that touched the saint. Relics are controversial but they are a part of official Catholic teaching. No *image* can be a relic.

... how is this item any different from other revered material objects, materials or matter?

to me it is not

places, materials, slivers of wood, etc. are of no more value than any other thing

the teachings of one, such as, “Jesus of Nazareth" is where the true value resides.

So the cheese sandwich is really of no more importance than a golden calf, any wall, building or mount

except that some value human life less than these things.

But some treat images (kissing of icons) or other substances (dirt or water) as special.

 I agree

see I kinda believe what nbc and deep are saying. But, I know that if I was handed something that Jesus wore or touched or carried (if it was proven) I would likely treasure it and do everything in my power to make sure it was in a well protected place of honor.

This includes yours truly. I have some holy water from the grotto at Lourdes. The reason this water is special is because miracles are associated with it. It must have a miracle associated with it. We Catholics, and also the Eastern Orthodox, are fond of icons. There has been alot of controversy over these things also. I suppose this sandwich could be classified as an icon. I prefer mine painted on wood.

Problem is, it's impossible to prove.

Yeah, that's a sticking point. Alot of this stuff is along the lines of Kierkegard's "leap of faith", something that must be believed and can't be proven.

Does this mean that the grilled cheese sandwich could be regarded as valuable?
