Here's what I want:

Post song lyrics, poems, quotes, religious verses, whatever...anything you find inspirational, meaningful or uplifting. I collect quotes like this into a notebook that I plan to give to my future child. ;) I was thinking of this because I'm listening to one of my favorite songs, a Woody Guthrie song that Wilco and Billy Bragg recorded on Mermaid Avenue, called "She Came Along to Me."

Please indicate who spoke/sang/wrote the words in question and where you found them.

I'd like to see this become an ongoing thread that people can add to whenever they find something new.

Thanks! :)

I'll start with the aforementioned lyrics:

and all creeds and kinds and colors of us are blending
till I suppose ten million years from now
we'll all be just alike
same color, same size, all working together
and maybe we'll have all of the fascists out of the way by then

--Woody Guthrie, "She Came Along to Me"

(It makes me think of FYM.) :)

May God bless and keep you always,
May your wishes all come true,
May you always do for others
And let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous,
May you grow up to be true,
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you.
May you always be courageous,
Stand upright and be strong,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

May your hands always be busy,
May your feet always be swift,
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful,
May your song always be sung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

~Bob Dylan

"If you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain."-Dolly Parton

"There’s a battle ahead, many battles are lost, but you’ll never see the end of the road while you’re traveling with me."-Crowded House, "Don't Dream It's Over"

"All the mud in this town, all the dirt in this world, none of it sticks on you. You shake it off, ‘cause you’re better than that, and you don’t need it, there’s nothing wrong with you, I‘ll walk along with you."-Finn Brothers, "Nothing Wrong With You"

"And if the darkness is to keep us apart, and if the daylight feels like it’s a long way off, and if your glass heart should crack, and for a second, you turn back, oh, no, be strong."-U2, "Walk On"

A few to start you off with :).

"My kids are starting to notice I'm a little different from the other dads. 'Why don't you have a straight job like everyone else?' they asked me the other day. I told them this story:

In the forest, there was a crooked tree and a straight tree. Every day, the straight tree would say to the crooked tree, 'Look at me...I'm tall, and I'm straight, and I'm handsome. Look at you...you're all crooked and bent over. No one wants to look at you.' And they grew up in that forest together. And then one day the loggers came, and they saw the crooked tree and the straight tree, and they said, 'Just cut the straight trees and leave the rest.' So the loggers turned all the straight trees into lumber and toothpicks and paper. And the crooked tree is still there, growing stronger and stranger every day."

-Tom Waits

Love never gives up.
Love cares more for others than for self.
Love doesn't want what it doesn't have.
Love doesn't strut,
Doesn't have a swelled head,
Doesn't force itself on others,
Isn't always "me first,"
Doesn't fly off the handle,
Doesn't keep score of the sins of others,
Doesn't revel when others grovel,
Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth,
Puts up with anything,
Trusts God always,
Always looks for the best,
Never looks back,
But keeps going to the end.

-The Bible, 1 Corinthians Chapter 13, verses 4-7 (as translated in The Message)

my favourite u2 lyrics:

'midnight is where the day begins' - lemon

'in dreams begin responsibilities' - acrobat

'i can't change the world, but i can change the world in me' - rejoice

"I am cognizant of the interrelatedness of all communities and states. I cannot sit idly by in Atlanta and not be concerned about what happens in Birmingham. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny.' -- Martin Luther King, Jr.

"It's difficult in times like these: ideals, dreams and cherished hopes rise within us, only to be crushed by grim reality. It's a wonder that I haven't abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart." -- Anne Frank, from the Diary of Anne Frank

I can relate to this one so well.

I know how to cheat at lotto
I've got a great idea for a song
I know the truth about Marilyn Monroe
I can prove Einstein's theory wrong

But that's not what motivates me,
I'm interested in apathy.

I've got the cure for all known disease
I can make money grow on trees
I know how to stop terrorism
I know one of the guys in TISM.

But that's not what motivates me,
I'm interested in apathy.

PHENOMENAL WOMAN
by Maya Angelou

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies
I'm not cute or built to suit a model's fashion size
But when I start to tell them
They think I'm telling lies.
I say
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips
The stride of my steps
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman
That's me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please
And to a man
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees
Then they swarm around me
A hive of honey bees.
I say
It's the fire in my eyes
And the flash of my teeth
The swing of my waist
And the joy in my feet.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman
That's me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me
They try so much
But they can't touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
I say
It's in the arch of my back
The sun of my smile
The ride of my breasts
The grace of my style.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman
That's me.

Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say
It's in the click of my heels
The bend of my hair
The palm of my hand
The need for my care.
'Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman
That's me.

May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face.
And rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.

~

Always remember to forget
The things that made you sad.
But never forget to remember
The things that made you glad.

Always remember to forget
The friends that proved untrue.
But never forget to remember
Those that have stuck by you.

Always remember to forget
The troubles that passed away.
But never forget to remember
The blessings that come each day.

~

May the saddest day of your future be no worse
Than the happiest day of your past.

~

May the Lord keep you in His hand
And never close His fist too tight.

~

May your neighbors respect you,
Trouble neglect you,
The angels protect you,
And heaven accept you.

~

May you always have work for your hands to do.
May your pockets hold always a coin or two.
May the sun shine bright on your windowpane.
May the rainbow be certain to follow each rain.
May the hand of a friend always be near you.
And may God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.

~

He who exalts himself shall be humbled, and he who humbles himself shall be exalted

"Well I'll solve the mystery for you. She's not perfect. You're not perfect either. The question is whether or not you're perfect for each other." ~Good Will Hunting

"When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life so that when you die, the world cries and you rejoice." ~Cherokee expression

"People who cease to believe in God or goodness altogether still believe in the devil. I don't know why. No, I do know why. Evil is always possible. And goodness is eternally difficult." ~Interview With A Vampire

"When a dream takes hold of you, what can you do? You can run with it, let it run your life, or let it go and think for the rest of your life about what might have been." ~Patch Adams

"You cannot discover new oceans unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore." ~Unknown

"Revolution starts at home, in your heart, in your refusal to compromise your beliefs and your values. I'm not interested in politics like people fighting back with sticks and stones, but in the politics of love. I think there is nothing more radical than two peoples loving each other, because it's so infrequent" ~Bono

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religon too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

Imagine, John Lennon

People asking questions lost in confusion,
Well I tell them there's no problem,
Only solutions

Watching the Wheels, John Lennon

Here are some of my favorite Enigma lyrics:

Love - Devotion
Feeling - Emotion
Don't be afraid to be weak
Don't be too proud to be strong
Just look into your heart my friend
That will be the return to yourself
The return to innocence
If you want, then start to laugh
If you must, then start to cry
Be yourself don't hide
Just believe in destiny
Don't care what people say
Just follow your own way
Don't give up and use the chance
To return to innocence
That's not the beginning of the end
That's the return to yourself
The return to innocence

---------------------------

Let us try to live our lost illusions
They're the sun at night
If we don't we'll never taste
The spice of life
And when it seems that we're in a dead end street
There's no reason to cry
Cause we have a helping hand who's always aside
Forever light

------------------------------

There is no teacher
Who can teach anything new
He can just help us to remember
The things we always knew

---------------------------------

Don't submit to stupid rules
Be yourself and not a fool
Don't accept average habits
Open your heart and push the limits

First they came for the Communists,
and I didn’t speak up,
because I wasn’t a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn’t speak up,
because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn’t speak up,
because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me,
and by that time there was no one
left to speak up for me.

I first heard this poem uttered from the lips of Dr Ang Swee Chai, a brave advocate of the Palestinian liberation cause, someone who braved bullets and kalashnikovs for the sake of the principles expressed in this poem.

Ok I have a few....

Will post them seperately. Hope that is ok.

Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin
Dance me through the panic ’til I’m gathered safely in
Lift me like an olive branch and be my homeward dove
Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love

Oh let me see your beauty when the witnesses are gone
Let me feel you moving like they do in babylon
Show me slowly what I only know the limits of
Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love
Me to the wedding now, dance me on and on
Dance me very tenderly and dance me very long
We’re both of us beneath our love, we’re both of us above
Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love

Dance me to the children who are asking to be born
Dance me through the curtains that our kisses have outworn
Raise a tent of shelter now, though every thread is torn
Dance me to the end of love

Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin
Dance me through the panic till I’m gathered safely in
Touch me with your naked hand or touch me with your glove
Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love

-Leonard Cohen

And another Cohen tune...

Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew her
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light
In every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah

You run and not grow weary. (Drowning Man)

Your love was a light bulb hanging over my bed. (Ultraviolet (light my way)...)

You say you'll give me a highway with no one on it (All I Want is You)

I don't know you, you don't know the half of it. (Dirty Day)

Don't let the bastards grind you down. (Acrobat)

Lookin' for to fill that God-shaped hole (Mofo)

Put flowers in the mud baby (Zooropa)

A new heart is what I need. Oh, God make it bleed. (Like A Song)

Geesh, I am so sorry. I really put wayyy to much... Couldnt help it :uhoh:

These are a a few quotes I like and find inspirational...and thought provoking.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.
John F. Kennedy
Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth.
John F. Kennedy
If art is to nourish the roots of our culture, society must set the artist free to follow his vision wherever it takes him.
John F. Kennedy
Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind.
John F. Kennedy
Our problems are man-made, therefore they may be solved by man. And man can be a s big as he wants. No problem of human destiny is beyond human beings.
John F. Kennedy
Those who dare to fail miserably can achieve greatly.
John F. Kennedy
War will exist until that distant day when the conscientious objector enjoys the same reputation and prestige that the warrior does today.
John F. Kennedy
Are you really sure that a floor can't also be a ceiling?
M. C. Escher
If you hear a voice within you say "you cannot paint," then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.
Vincent Van Gogh
The more I study religions the more I am convinced that man never worshipped anything but himself.
Richard Burton
Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.
Victor Hugo
When you are courting a nice girl an hour seems like a second. When you sit on a red-hot cinder a second seems like an hour. That's relativity.
Albert Einstein
Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.
Albert Einstein
Wit is educated insolence.
Aristotle
I'm not offended by all the dumb blonde jokes because I know I'm not dumb... and I also know that I'm not blonde.
Dolly Parton
Genius is more often found in a cracked pot than in a whole one.
"It is a good thing for an uneducated man to read books of quotations. Bartlett's Familiar Quotations is an admirable work, and I studied it intently. The quotations when engraved upon the memory give you good thoughts. They also make you anxious to read the authors and look for more." - Sir Winston Churchill :wink:
And this gem from Reuters: "Using artificial insemination to get pregnant, lesbians are four times more likely to have children than gay men." -- Reuters uncovers a shocking statistic
It doesn't interest me if the story you're telling me is true
I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself; if you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul. I want to know if you can be faithful and therefore be trustworthy. I want to know if you can see beauty even when it is not pretty every day, and if you can source your life from its presence. I want to know if you can live with failure, yours and mine, and still stand on the edge of a lake and shout to the silver of the full moon, "YES!"
- The Oriah Mountain Dreamer "The Invitation"
Various Sources:
"Live a life to make the undertaker weep at your grave" - Turkish proverb
"The fastest way to succeed is to look as if you're playing
by somebody else's rules, while quietly playing by your own" - Michael Korda
"An eye for and eye makes the whole world blind" - Ghandi
U2 Lyrics:
Please
Intransegence is all around
military still in town
armor plated suits and ties
daddy just won't say goodbye
referee won't blow the whistle
god is good but will he listen
I'm nearly great but there's something missing
I left it in the
duty free
it never really
belonged to me
One
One love
One blood
One life
you got to do what you should
One life
with each other
sisters
brothers
One life
but we're not the same
we get to carry each other
carry each other
one
one
So Cruel
"Between the horses of love and lust, we are trampled underfoot"
The Fly
It's no secret that the stars are falling from the sky
It's no secret that our world is in darkness tonight.
They say the sun is sometimes eclipsed by the moon
Y' know I don't see you when she walks in the room.
It's no secret that a friend is someone who lets you help.
It's no secret that a liar won't believe anyone else.
They say a secret is something you tell one other person
So I'm telling you, child.
Love, we shine like a
Burning star
We're falling from
The sky... tonight
A man will beg
A man will crawl
On the sheer face of love
Like a fly on a wall
It's no secret at all
It's no secret that a conscience can sometimes be a pest.
It's no secret ambition bites the nails of success.
Every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief;
All kill their inspiration and sing about the grief.
Love, we shine like a
Burning star
We're falling from
The sky... tonight
A man will beg
A man will crawl
On the sheer face of love
Like a fly on a wall
It's no secret at all
Love, we shine like a
Burning star
We're falling from
The sky... tonight
A man will beg
A man will crawl
On the sheer face of love
Like a fly on a wall
It's no secret at all
It's no secret that the stars are falling from the sky
The universe exploding 'cos-a one man's lie.
Look I gotta go, yeah, I'm running outta change;
There's a lot of things if I could I'd rearrange.
One Tree Hill
"I'll see you again, when the stars fall from the sky, and the moon has turned red, over One Tree Hill"
With Or Without You
"Through the storm we reach the shore, you give it all but I want more"
Lennon Lyrics
Love
Love is real, real is love
Love is feeling, feeling love
Love is wanting to be loved
Love is touch, touch is love
Love is reaching, reaching love
Love is asking to be loved
Love is you
You and me
Love is knowing
We can be
Love is free, free is love
Love is living, living love
Love is needing to be loved
Imagine
Imagine there's no heaven,
It's easy if you try,
No hell below us,
Above us only sky,
Imagine all the people
living for today...
Imagine there's no countries,
It isn't hard to do,
Nothing to kill or die for,
No religion too,
Imagine all the people
living life in peace...
You may say I'm a dreamer,
but 'Im not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will live as one.
Imagine no possesions,
I wonder if you can,
No need for greed or hunger,
A brotherhood of man,
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...
You may say I'm a dreamer,
but 'Im not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will live as one.
Working Class Hero
As soon as you’re born they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate you if you’re clever and they despise a fool
Till you’re so fucking crazy you can’t follow their rules
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
When they’ve tortured and scared you for twenty odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can’t really function you’re so full of fear
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
Keep you doped with religion and sex and tv
And you think you’re so clever and classless and free
But you’re still fucking peasants as far as I can see
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
There’s room at the top they are telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like the folks on the hill
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
If you want to be a hero well just follow me
If you want to be a hero well just follow me
End Part 1
Ok I have to put some of these little sayings in. They are not profound or inspiring in any way and let me know if it isn't appropriate to put them on this thread. I don't mind at all....
Growing up in Georgia, I heard quite a few sayings and here are some of them....
"Grinning like a mule eattin' briars" (said when someone is realllllly smiling)
"He could bite a pumpkin through a barbed-wire fence" (not a nice thing, said about someone with buck teeth).
"Tight as Dick's hat band." (Said when trying to open a jar and you can't or trying to untangle a knot of any kind, or when your pants are a bit small.)
"My stars!" (State of shock or suprise.... my mom still says this.)
"Good night Miss Agnes!" ( said when you are not pleased... my mom still says this one too...)
Ok my husband is from Northern Ireland and he has introduced me to several "new" sayings....
"He could peel an apple through a tennis raquet" (the whole buck teeth thing, evidentally is trans-atlantic)
"Thick as two short planks" (said of an "intellectual tortoise")
"Tight as two coats of paint" (said of someone that is cheap)
"Is the pope catholic?" (said to me always when I am asking a question where the answer is yes)
"Does a one-legged duck swim in circles?" (again the answer is yes)
"It's mingin'!" (said when the house is filthy i.e. I have kicked my shoes off in the middle of the living room again....)
"Wee" ( and I only point this out because in Cookstown, where he is from, everything is wee... including the semi trucks going down the road)
"What's the craic?" ( craic = crack ... I love this one obviously hence my nick... it means what's going on? anything happening, also good craic = good laugh, fun etc...)
If its ok that I am posting these I will post more later.
Take care,
Carrie
If
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream--and not make dreams your master,
If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!
--Rudyard Kipling
