It's all really just a confusion of semantics. Modernity and Modernism are not in reference to the same thing... the reason why they are so poorly defined in general is because each discipline has an exclusive meaning for the respective phrases. Interpretations of origin differ tremendously, nevermind the actual applications. The only coterminous is found in the word itself, not in the usage.

And to make matters more confusing, Modernism as a literary trend arrived quite late in Latin America. Unfortunately, that's where most of my training in Modernism comes from. Plus, it is difficult to take a literary perspective and try to apply it to other aspects like philosophy, architecture, religion, etc. The same terminology may mean different things or have different implications in another field of study.

However, I'm learning a lot from the rest of you.

well said cujo...it's also important to realize the structural eras differ from philosophical ones. what i mean by that is post-modern buildings could have been built in the modern era. someone suggested that we've progressed to the post-post-modern. i disagree, i think we still are moving towards post-modernism. at times in this early stage there will be conservative rebellions (by conservative i simply mean those wishing to keep things the way they are...i'm not talking politics).

I think this is probably the inevitable cycle. In that regard we will continually be shifting between the Modern and the PostModern, in whatever aesthetic veil they may embody.
