TODAY'S LORD'S PRAYER

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Eternal Spirit

Earth-Maker, Pain-bearer, Life-giver,

source of all that is and that shall be,
Father and Mother of us all.
Loving God, in whom is heaven.

The hallowing of your name echoes through the universe!

The way of your justice be followed by the peoples of the earth!

Your heavenly will be done by all created beings!

Your commonwealth of peace and freedom sustain our hope and come on earth.

With the bread we need for today, feed us.

In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us.

In times of temptation and test, spare us.

From the grip of all that is evil, free us.

For you reign in the glory of the power that is love, now and forever.

Amen.

From the Book of Common Prayer of New Zealand.

I remember hearing this story where a woman was invited to have dinner with this family. They asked her to say grace, for it was their tradition for the guest to say the prayer. She wasn't extremely religious and not used to saying prayers in front of people so she didn't know what to say. So the father of the household said just quote one of your favorite verses from the Bible. The family sat there with their heads bowed and waited as the woman struggled to think of something, and then she remembered the only verse in the Bible she ever memorized, only because it was the shortest;

"Jesus wept. Amen"

It's short, quick, but it says a lot.

Ive always liked the serentiy prayer because it's a prayer asking for inner strength and peac in times of struggle. Here it is

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

I don't pray for things, or for people to get well, or for world peace or for something that I want to happen, things like that, because those things are my will and may not be Thy will. So for me there is only one prayer which is to align my will with Thy will. This one just about covers everything:

Thy will be done.

Oh and Ive always liked this too

Footprints in the Sand

One night a man had a dream. He dreamed
he was walking along the beach with the LORD.

Across the sky flashed scenes from his life.
For each scene he noticed two sets of
footprints in the sand: one belonging
to him, and the other to the LORD.

When the last scene of his life flashed before him,
he looked back at the footprints in the sand.

He noticed that many times along the path of
his life there was only one set of footprints.

He also noticed that it happened at the very
lowest and saddest times in his life.

This really bothered him and he
questioned the LORD about it:

"LORD, you said that once I decided to follow
you, you'd walk with me all the way.
But I have noticed that during the most
troublesome times in my life,
there is only one set of footprints.
I don't understand why when
I needed you most you would leave me."

The LORD replied:

"My son, my precious child,
I love you and I would never leave you.
During your times of trial and suffering,
when you see only one set of footprints,
it was then that I carried you."

This is the "Grace" I posted around Christmastime; it's from an episode of (of all things) Six Feet Under.

***

For food in a world where many walk in hunger;
for friends in a world where many walk alone;
and for faith in a world where many walk in fear;

We thank you, God.

Lord, give me the strength to... (insert obstacle of the day/week/minute here)

Great thread idea. I think whatever is from the heart is the best prayer. As Bono once said, "All God wants is a willing heart and for us to call out to him."
Joyfulgirl, I really like your simple, yet powerful choice. Thanks for sharing that.:up:

:hmm:

You know I always thought that passage Bono paraphrases before Streets on the Boston DVD sounds like a nice prayer. I think it's

What can I give back to God
For the blessings he poured out on me
What can I give back to God
For the blessings he poured out on me

I'll lift high the cup of salvation
This is a toast to our Father
Following through on the promise I made to him,
From the heart!

Nice one neutral. I get goose bumps every time I hear him say that. (Then, I continue to get them when the song starts, of course.)

I love the Serenity Prayer, and what neutral posted

I love the Hail Mary and the Rosary. Usually when I go to church I focus on the Mary statue quite a bit. It brings me comfort as strange as that sounds I suppose to many people.

Hail Mary, full of grace.
Our Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb,
Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Both the Serenity and the Lord's Prayer are both favorites of mine, but I have another one.

Every Minute

Through every minute of this day, be with me Lord!
Through every day of this week, be with me Lord!
Through every week of this year, be with me Lord!
So shall the days and weeks and years be threaded on a golden cord.
And all draw on this sweet accord into thy fullness, Lord, that so,
When time is past,
By grace I may last,
Be with me Lord.

I find the Serenity and the Lord's Prayer both very beautiful.

Hope you enjoy this one, which is one of my favourite:

Awaken To a new dawn,
I stretch to Infinity 'n reach Beyond the Stars,
In an instant I return,
filling every tissue, sinew, with Joy,
I feed the nectar of life, into each molecule and cell,
The mind and body embrace Divine love
Through the eye of time I see eternity,
Life in life shine bright,
Shine the torch of majestic light,
Find the path to my universal frame,
So I may bask in the wisdom of pure potential,
Guide my hand to write your words.

This is a celebration prayer.

May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face.
And rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.

Opening Prayer for the thrid class in the four class series on AIDS that I am teaching in my Church.

[Q]We are here today to explore the effects of HIV on our brothers and sisters in the body of Christ, in Africa.

We will hear stories of many people, we do not know, who are suffering or have died from this disease.

The stories will reflect the fears and hopes of those who are suffering from this disease, and of those who care for them.

For the many who have been touched by this illness, it seems at times like a never ending darkness.

The lighting of this candle is a symbol to remind us of the words of John’s gospel

That there is a light that shines in the darkness , and that the darkness has not overcome it.

So let us come together with our Lord today, to her the stories:

the Lord who touched the lepers,
the Lord who touched the lonely,
the Lord who waits to touch our hearts today.
Amen.[/Q]

and the closing prayer:

[Q]Prayer for Africa

God bless Africa
Guard her children
Guide her leaders
And give her peace
For Jesus Christ’s sake.

Amen[/Q]
