I just realized that I am getting pop up adds when I'm not even online. I do have cable so I realize that I'm sort of online all the time, but I thought I needed an open window for this crap to infiltrate my screen... I even cleaned all cookies etc to no avail. How can they do this B.S.? Now I can't even use my computer without having pop up killer on all the time. When will this stuff be illegal?

Anyone know how to get rid of this stuff? I would guess that it is a small file in the windows folder or something. I am running explorer 6 on a newer P4. HELP!:(

the pop-up ads you get when you're not even online may be from windows messenger. that's not microsoft messenger (the chat/im software), but something installed automatically on your computer. if it shows your ip address, then that's what it is.

here's how to disable it:

Go to Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services. Find the Messenger Service, right click on it, choose properties. Set it to Disabled.

Simplest way to get rid of popups once and for all:

I sure post about mozilla a lot... just trying to enlighten the masses

Edit:

Of course this won't really help you with offline popups, and I see you've already solved that problem. But everyone does hate internet popups, right?

So as long as I'm here...

Edit2:

Geez, I sound like I'm working for mozilla... *must control fanaticism*

Hello,

If you even have pop-ups when no browser or so is open, there may be spyware installed on your computer. Kazaa is one of the many spyware programs out there. You can search for and remove spyware by using Ad Aware by Lavasoft. Here's the link for it: http://www.lavasoft.de/

And Squid, Mozilla is indeed a great browser. It can block pop-up ads, block images from certain servers (great tool to block annoying banners) and it has tabbed browsing. At home I use it (almost) all the time and it's also on my (business) laptop, but at the project I'm currently working, I unfortunately have to use IE again. Still waiting for a 1.0 release of Phoenix though as that one is supposed to be much smaller (as it's only a browser) and faster than Mozilla. Still, Mozilla is great.

C ya!

 this stuff works wonders. back in my naive net surfing days, when i had stuff like gator and kazaa on my computer, when i ran this for the first time, it found several hundred pieces of spyware, just from these two programs.

now i use kazaa lite and just figure that tough shit, i have to remember my passwords. and guess what! i run ad aware about once a month and i get MAYBE one piece of spyware now. :D

AMEN to ad aware:up::up:, got rid of like 25 spyware/adaware crap on my computer, not getting any more popups! me so happy!
