Pilgrimage plans!

In November I'm making a trip to Washington. It's for my work with the African Well Fund, but it's also to visit a Franciscan monastery, called Holy Land of America. This shrine is modeled after the famous Ayasofia building in Istanbul, which was first a church, then a mosque, and now a museum. It's going to be a great experience for me. I can't wait!

I've been to a number of Franciscan monasteries in Europe and they're really wonderful. The friars are very simple, they live without material possessions and actually in the last decade or so, many of them have spent time in Buddhist monasteries in Tibet, India, Thailand, etc, and Buddhist monks from those places have done the opposite, because they are finding that a lot of their principles for daily life are similar. It's really interesting.

I saw the site for the place for the first time today. I almost fell out of my chair, the pure beauty of the place and the idea was overwhelming. I can't wait to get there.
