PC Sports

Surprised this didn't get mentioned in FYM earlier.

NCAA American Indian mascot ban will begin Feb. 1

Quote:
Nicknames or mascots deemed "hostile or abusive" would not be allowed on team uniforms or other clothing beginning with any NCAA tournament after Feb. 1, said Harrison, the University of Hartford's president.

"What each institution decides to do is really its own business" outside NCAA championship events, Harrison said.

"What we are trying to say is that we find these mascots to be unacceptable for NCAA championship competition," he added.

At least 18 schools have mascots the NCAA deem "hostile or abusive," including Florida State's Seminoles and Illinois' Illini. The full list of schools was not immediately released.

I think it was mentioned in the sports sub-forum.

Hmmm, political correctness can go too far.

sorry, but i have no problems when the mascots are horrible, racist caricatures of Native Americans.

we would never accept the same cartooning of blacks, asians, and jews. why would we do that to Native Americans?

That is so true, I certainly hope we wouldn't accept that

Remember that tomahawk chop thing they had in Atlanta, I don't know if they still do that..Jane Fonda used to do it when she was at the games w/ Ted Turner

Which of the college mascots do you find "horrible, racist caricatures"?

The only overtly racist name I can think of immediately would probably be the Washington Redskins (though, that's a professional sports team, not a college team).

Also, the Cleveland Indians mascot (not the name, just the mascot) could possibly be viewed as a racist caricature. Just a tad politically incorrect, I'd say. Once again though, that's a professional team.

Will they ban the Fighting Irish? Some may find that a horrible stereotype of Irish people.

How is the name Seminole offensive? It's the name of their tribe. If anything Florida St is making more people aware of the tribe.

Should we change Notre Dame's name from Fighting Irish because some Irish pacifists don't like it?

The NCAA is a Nazi-like organization so it's not surprising they are doing something like this.

Yes or leprachaun toys/puppets, etc on Patrick's day.

Oh God my PC compass doesn't know where to turn.

not college, am not that familiar with all college sports, but the Cleveland Indians mascot is offensive.

just the name "Redskins" bothers me a bit.

if you give me time, i'm sure i can dig some up.

and i don't think there are a whole lot.

I figured Chief WaaHoo makes the list.

The college mascots, the ones subject to the ban, are respectfully done and acknowledge the cultural heritage of the schools' locations.

The Seminole Native Americans support the use of their name by the Florida school. Why in hell's name should anyone object to their use of the name? This is PC gone nuts.

I hope not. I'm irish and a fan of Notre Dame and I like the name. Years back, ND's nickname was the Ramblers. Doesn't have the same zing to it.
