I vaguely remember something about these rumors. The neighborhood was full of them. I didn't believe them, I thought it was too strange.
 
I wonder if the Paul is Dead conspiracy helped maintain the popularity of The Beatles, although I'm sure they'd have real nice lives regardless.

I don't think the conspiracy rumors hurt the Beatles, but they really didn't need it to be wildly popular.
