Orphaned Iraqi boy becomes haunting face of war

http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/L09340868.htm

I'm not going to directly post the picture, it's sort of graphic, so here's a link
http://www.antiwar.com/photos/ali.jpg

LONDON, April 9 (Reuters) - From Hiroshima to Vietnam, pictures of horrifically injured children have long formed the starkest and most enduring images of war.

Now a badly burned Iraqi boy, who lost his family and both arms in a U.S. bombing raid on Baghdad, has become the face of suffering in the conflict for many around the world and sparked a flood of fundraising appeals.snip

"The picture that will stay with us...the image that refuses to leave the retina no matter how many times you blink, is of 12-year-old Ali Ismaeel Abbas," London's Evening Standard said as it launched an appeal on behalf of the Red Cross.

Three days ago the child haltingly told Reuters journalist Samia Nakhoul -- herself later injured when a U.S. tank shelled a Baghdad hotel on Tuesday -- how war had shattered his life. The Reuters photographer was Faleh Kheiber.

The missile that obliterated Ali's home also killed his father, pregnant mother, brother, three cousins and three other relatives and left him without his arms and badly burned.

Yes, little boy, it's for your own good! You'll thank us for it in the long run!

though you may be pro-war, this is really, REALLY unappropriate in this context.

i mean come on...

thats a horrible picture.

at least this war appears to almost be over.

Maybe you didn't catch the dripping sarcasm.
And the war is far from over.

Edit: Me? Pro-war? I must have missed the memo.

yes sometimes you have to wonder whether or not the ends justify the means. I think a lot of people from my generation don't understand the reality of war, they think it's some kind of glorious game (and no I'm not refering to anyone on this board, I'm talking about the average high schooler who has no knowledge of the world outside his own). Iraq better get the liberation we've been promising and not Saddam II who's our puppet.

There is nothing to say to a story like this. Prayers do not seem like enough.

I wonder, I really wonder from the bottom of my heart whether we even have the right to expect this child to forgive us. How do we sit here and tell him that he had to be liberated at this cost? Should he forgive, can he, would you? These are the tough questions nobody wants to answer.

I'm a little bit ashamed to be human when I see that.

I don't think I'd have the heart to ask that of him, even though I didn't support what is happening.

I read the story about this boy. His uncle carried him to hospital, he has also lost all his family (10, extended). Of course there are not enough anitbiotics in Iraq, so many infections that could be prevented cannot. This includes our rescued POW's. Amputation is the only alternative. And to that the lack of anesthesia (per Red Cross) 5 or 6 shots necessary to amputate - patient sceaming all the while (see US civil war).

I'm happy for the 200 hundred shiites in the square (where were the 5m?) but I'm sad for him and many liike him. If we don't get humanitarian aid in we will be worse than a butcher.

How come we don't have convoys right behind us?

Me too. Honestly, this is too sad. This is what they mean when they say you lose *everything*. There's nothing for this kid to lose, quite literally. It breaks my heart.
