Why would a Law Abiding citizen need a gun that can carry more than 10 rounds?

Let's simplify that: why would a law abiding citizen need a gun?

I have no desire to hunt or kill anything because I'm not a barbarian and I live in a safe first world country, so of course I don't need to be armed.

Fair enough. Well some people need guns for their job, which is fine by me. But like you, I have absolutely no desire to be armed at all. I don't need it, so I have no need to want it.

My friend's parents are both hunters by profession, so they have guns. But they are stored in a locked safe of which nobody else in the house knows the code (which is mandatory by law), with the bullets out. So when they are called in by the uhh, forest rangers I guess? They bring their gun, set out into the woods to either manage the population of the animals there or to finish off injured beyond recovery animals (deer that have jumped in front of cars for instance) and do their job. Then the animal is brought to the local butcher, and the gun is locked again into the safe. Nobody can take out the gun to go crazy and shoot somebody, they get regular checks if they are still capable of wielding a gun, and are properly trained (you need a permit to become a hunter here that requires several months of training, how to properly handle the gun, how to properly treat the animals you hunt, awareness on the laws, etc etc).

My friend is going to get her permit sometime next year, she grew up in a hunters family and is going to follow in their footsteps besides her regular job. Good for her, and I'm glad she has that opportunity. But I'm also glad I don't have to do it.

So people that want to use guns for hunting can still get them here. Even those that shoot for fun can keep a gun in a locker at a gun range. BUT it is pretty properly regulated. So how can the gun nuts in the US not want regulations when it makes them safer in the end too?

My grandpa and uncles were hunters, and I remember their rifles were in one of the bedrooms at my grandparents' house when I was young. I don't specifically remember any lectures/warnings about the guns, but I knew to leave them alone. (I'm also sure they weren't loaded - my grandparents weren't complete idiots.)

My parents now have a small gun. I don't love the idea, but more or less understand it. When they take their RV to the southwest in the winter, they go driving/hiking in some really remote locations and never know what they will run into.

But, even in 2015 it's true - there are people in rural US locations who still hunt for food. So I can understand the need/desire for certain types of guns.

I'm thinking we need well trained (can't stress that enough) armed guards at schools and other public places.

It won't stop all, but it may reduce the frequency.

I didn't use to think this way but it's obvious we will not pass any laws to make guns less accessible to those who shouldn't have them. So if we won't go that route, we need to pay more as a society to protect ourselves from one another.

We have armed guards protecting our produce at whole foods and we don't blink an eye, so why not station someone in front of schools or theaters?

Again, not the society we want, but seems like it's the option best served right now.

We Americans care more about our guns than we do life, so we need to adapt

Let's simplify that: why would a law abiding citizen need a gun?

Because they like to shoot them at shooting ranges. My husband owns several handguns and rifles; granted, mostly black powder so they're fairly unregulated, but he has several smokeless guns. He likes to shoot them at shooting ranges after work. We have a gun safe. He's never bought them for "protection." He likes the mechanisms and the history. He's a Buddhist who was a vegetarian until around five years ago. Guns don't fascinate me, but I'm a crack shot with my pink BB gun (after some practice).

I'm thinking we need well trained (can't stress that enough) armed guards at schools and other public places.

I can't imagine any Republican wanting to pay for this. They'll want to talk about it, but they're so obsessed with "no more taxes" that there's no way in hell they'll want to pay for fully-qualified, adequately trained guards.

Plus, remodeling schools to make them contained enough to make the guards effective would cost so much more money than anyone is willing to spend. It took a miracle to get the voters in my district to approve a bond issue to update our schools' electrical wiring to make it handle to computers required for state testing.

And, think of how effective the "well-trained" TSA can be. How much more would school guards have to be paid to be trained enough to actually stop one of these clowns? It's difficult for police and they're extremely well-trained in marksmanship, use of force, etc.

Beal made a VERY funny joke today ;).

Anyways, my high school had an armed guard at it. I actually kinda thought that was normal. He was a police officer that was just constantly stationed there.

He did not make me feel any safer.

I'm still trying to deal with the idea of an armed guard at Whole Foods. :(

Like, I know people get really testy in the parking lot at Whole Foods, but come on.

There's security at many grocery stores that I go to, but I've never noticed them to be armed, fwiw.

I work at a grocery store. Our security guy is armed and since open carry is legal here, everyone knows he is.

WE have security guards at the stores here in town, but I don't know if they're armed. If they are, they're apparently very secretive about it.

I'm also VERY wary of the idea of security guards at schools. martha makes a good point about funding them and all that sort of thing, but even beyond that, just...no. I'm already wary enough about metal detectors in schools, because it makes them seem WAY too much like prisons. Adding guards to that mix-that's not what school should be, and I'd worry about kids finding ways to get the guns, too. I don't feel comfortable with ANYONE, I don't care who it is, carrying guns on school campuses to begin with.

What we need to do is make it so kids aren't walking off to school with guns from their homes in the first place. If parents are careless with where they leave their guns, or if their kid takes their gun and commits a crime with it, the parents need to be held responsible for that.

As for the Ted Nugent link from a couple pages back, I'm not even going to click on it. No need to kick of the day by making my blood pressure rise. But judging from the title of the link, safe to say that guy can be added to the "massive dumbass" pile.

Putting armed guards everywhere would be placing a bandage on a festering wound. It feeds into the fears of our gun culture and does nothing to solve our underlying problem.

Apropos of nothing much, but (and bear in mind I live on the other side of the world), an early episode of the recent, and garbage, tv series 'Fear The Walking Dead' featured some characters showing up for school, and I wasn't sure if I was looking at some sort of juvenile detention facility or a school.

I've never seen a guard at a supermarket here, and guards at other places (Casinos for instance) are not armed as it's not allowed by law here.. yet I never feel unsafe when going to these places.

But we do nothing to solve the underlying issue. Nothing.

My point is why not take some steps to reduce the chances. Even if it seems stupid or giving in.

We do nothing now.

Just speaking for myself, I don't want to live in an environment of fearmongering. I'd rather move to a country that isn't damaged goods. It's not a solution for me.

Gun nuts would touch themselves thinking of the idea, I'm sure.

Good luck.

I haven't seen that series, but that sums up my point fairly well.

LemonMelon's sentiments are mine. I feel very, very uneasy about the idea of walking around town knowing so many "good guys" are armed. It would make me more nervous, not less. Too much risk for abuse of power and trigger-happy people getting hired for those kinds of jobs and just...no. It's creepy.

I find this talk of armed guards at schools, supermarkets, etc. to be simply extraordinary and almost incomprehensible.

I come from a country where not even the regular cops carry guns. When I first moved from New Zealand to Australia, I found it confronting that Australian cops carry guns. Even as a kid - as a ten year old boy who thought guns were cool and liked action novels - it stuck out to me. Why would they even need guns if the place were safe?

Totally agree. I would be super depressed if that happened here.

Says something about the ingrained negative issues in the US when arming these people is a preferable solution to actually doing something.

Brings up images of the wild west, doesn't it?

I mean, would you really feel safer checking out at a grocery store with the armed guard and some lunatic in a shoot out?
