I, for one, don't have a problem with her. But then she has no power at all in my country :-)

She, for one, at least seems to have her head screwed on. Like a watered down, but better looking, Margaret Thatcher.

And yes, I am sure the entire world hated/hates Thatcher to some degree, but she was a pretty good leader.

With more women like her around, we could see more females running governments around the world.

is that the same Pravda....

anyway, she's probably arrogant although I haven't gotten that from the relatively few times I've watched her speak. Instead I noticed that her voice seems to shake constantly and she seems very nervous, which seems to indicate she's not a good liar which is why I don't think she could do well as a president.

she's always struck me as thoroughly competent, no matter how awful i think some of the things she says are. i think i was most impressed with her during the 9-11 hearings: she got up there and, just like any other politician, she stonewalled and evaded Congress and refused to take any responsibility for anything.

good for her. she's like the best rebounder on the team. why should she be subject to greater expectations than anyone else? she was hired to do a job, and she's doing it.

i do think that much of the attention she gets is due to her race and gender. it's simply a fact, neither good nor bad. she's a pioneer, of sorts, and is simply going to attract attention because of that.

and i do admit, she does fascinate me, but in more of a "what is she *really* like" kind of way.

I think women in politics need to be a little aggressive, strong and confident. I'm sure the same things have been said about Hillary now that she's a senator...and if they haven't, they will when it looks like she may run for Prez in the near future

I thought some about this thread and was trying to find a similar specific misogynist statement by Rush Limbaugh which he is apparently proud of because he uses it repeatedly and I have heard it often. I couldn't find the exact quote, but the paraphrase is that feminism was invented by ugly women who did not have a place in society because they could not find a man.

[q]Feminism was established to allow unattractive women easier access to the mainstream of society. -Rush Limbaugh [/q]

here are some other lovely quotes:

[q]Feminists are desperately anxious to prove that women are as strong as capable as men. Clearly they are nagged by a fear that women may NOT be as strong and as capable as men. --Ted Kaczynski, pt. 14 in the Unabomber's manifesto

[Feminism is] a socialist, anti-family, political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians. --Pat Robertson, 1992 Republican National Convention

The feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism, and become lesbians. -Pat Robertson (Christian Coalition)

I know this is painful for the ladies to hear, but if you get married, you have accepted the headship of a man, your husband. Christ is the head of the household and the husband is the head of the wife, and that's the way it is, period. -Pat Robertson (Christian Coalition)

I'm an old-fashioned woman. Men should take care of women, and if men were taking care of women today, we wouldn't have to vote. -Kay O'Connor (Kansas Senate Republican)

The demise of our community and culture is the fault of sissified men who have been overly influenced by women. -Tony Evans (Promise Keepers)

Feminism was established to allow unattractive women easier access to the mainstream of society. -Rush Limbaugh

Rail as they will about 'discrimination,' women are simply not endowed by nature with the same measures of single-minded ambition and the will to succeed in the fiercely competitive world of Western capitalism. -Pat Buchanan [/q]

I have to give Dr. Rice her props for being an African-American woman who has made it in what is essentially rich WASPy boy network.

And Vladimir Zhirinovsky is truly an ass muppet, but sadly his POV isn't that uncommon. Far too many people see women who are single and especially who are childless as deeply flawed. I'm childfree and I've been accused of being immoral, selfish, unwomanly, irresponsible over a decision I put a lot of thought in. A while back, I read a book about mothers in the workplace. Now if the author wanted to mention how being a mother made her a more effective worker, fine, but she spent ungodly amounts of time slamming women without children. She claimed they are cold, unbalanced, and unfeeling. She called women without children "dragon ladies" and told the readers to have children or else they will be viewed as immature and unprofessional. It really pissed me off.

Thanks, Irvine. Interesting post, Golightly Grrl. I agree it's not an uncommon point of view at all.

I don't care for Condi's politics, but I respect her intelligence, her discipline, and her achievements. She used to be a pairs figure skater, but quit when she realized she wasn't good enough for the Olympics. This is one goal-oriented lady.
