Road kill candy angers animal rights activists

TRENTON, New Jersey (AP) -- Animal rights activists are disgusted by a new candy from Kraft Foods Inc. that's shaped like critters run over by cars -- complete with tire treads.

The fruity-flavored Trolli Road Kill Gummi Candy -- in shapes of partly flattened snakes, chickens and squirrels -- fosters cruelty toward animals, according to the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Is eating candy shaped like animals (with no tread marks) any better??

I find it disgusting. I agree those types of items may add to and foster cruelty to animals. Children today already have enough behavior issues and eating something like that is just gross bad manners which should not be encouraged.

Eating animal shapes and eating shapes of animals which have been run over by cars and show tire tracks are two different things. Again, its ignorant and disgusting.
It fosters curelty to animals because the shapes show dead animals which have been hit by cars and it could cause kids to think that it is cool or ok to run over or kill animals. Also, animals should not be protrayed in that way.

Explain why they are two different things.

Both result in a "dead" animal....

It was already explained. If you don't understand, I can't help that. Maybe you need to re-read the posts. I also think common sense does come into play here.:eyebrow:

Yeah, a little common sense from people over-reacting to such a silly thing would definitely be a good thing here.

What's next? Banning chickens in the store because kids will go out and think it's cool to cut off the head of a chicken and pluck all it's feathers off? :eyebrow:

I haven't noticed a lot of impressionable little kids driving cars these days either.

I'm glad you brought up animal crackers NBC. Have you ever noticed how many animals they put in one cage? That's cruel in itself. Plus they have lions in their with monkeys, we know the monkeys aren't going to last long.

Not to mention the iced-animal crackers. I mean, seriously, am I the only one who sees the comparison of frosted cookies to helpless animals in disasterous oil spills?

I just wish our candy makers had more sensitivity. First they color the worst flavored jelly bean black, and now this. For shame.

*Sigh*

I certainly don't condone animals being run over, but...my god, it's just candy. A kid will not automatically think it's cool to run over animals just by seeing this candy-if they thought that was cool, they would've thought it long before seeing this candy, and it'd be due in part to their parents most likely not teaching them that you don't do that to animals.

Going by this animal group's logic, I guess kids had better not watch the Road Runner cartoons anymore, 'cause that coyote gets flattened, has tire marks, blows up, burns up, etc., etc. (funny, I watched that cartoon, and still think anybody who treats real-life animals in a cruel fashion of any kind is a total low-life).

It's a little silly, IMO. As long as the kids realize it's candy, it's fine. I bit off the heads of many animals when I was little and I turned out OK. ;)

Leno had an animal craker humping another one on ebay last night.

Kind of amusing that no one bid on it.

I won't go nuts over it, but I won't bother buying the candy either. I stop for living, breathing animals on the road, but I'm not going to make noise over gummies.

I don't even know if I would call it logic, but other than that, I agree with this. Candies have been in the shape of animals for years. While I find it strange that anyone would want to buy or sell roadkill candy, I don't see the direct link to animal cruelty. Nobody is complaining about gummi army men, which if you take on their perspective for another issue, would lead to humans killing humans. Seemingly, adding a tire mark is child pornography from their perspective. I think some of us have lost our sense of humor.

Let's be sure to protest these links as well:

:lmao: at these responses!

Seriously though--I love animals and am always concerned about their welfare. I don't wear fur because I think its cruel. But this is just ridiculous. Why not spend your time and energy volunteering at an animal shelter or wildlife refuge? Clean trash off beaches? Spread the word about the Wild Horse Preservation Act. Something actually useful to the animals you claim to be serving. Attention-grabbing campaigns like these just serve to undermine the whole cause.

This thread reminds me of one of my weird quirks--I won't eat gummi candies if they are at all "cute." It's a big joke among everyone who knows me that I refuse to eat gummi bears "because of their little faces." I haven't been confronted with a bag of them in a long time, so I don't know if my resolve still holds. ;)

I totally agree that these causes make more sense. There are some who are very compassionate of animals, which I can surely respect if their cause is substantial.

LOL, exactly. Nice to see I'm not alone.

AvsGirl, excellent point .

Its JUST candy.

I've eaten Gummi worms and have never desired to eat a real worm...I've bitten the ears and tails off chocolate Easter bunnies and I've never thought about biting a real rabbit.

Roadkill candy is distasteful and kind of stupid but I doubt any kids will want to run over and eat a real animal.

Well said! Personally, I find that there's a big difference between being socially concerned and responsible, and being a hysterical lunatic. Just my opinion. This is the same sort of "logic" that led groups of numpties to spread the word about the Harry Potter books encouraging Satanism.

Those people need to get a grip on reality and, as far as I'm concerned, expend their considerable energy fighting the real problems we face, such as the consistent illtreatment of humans and other animals.

Thank you. Exactly. Same with BAW's post...ah, common sense DOES still exist in this world! Hooray! :D.

Well said! Personally, I find that there's a big difference between being socially concerned and responsible, and being a hysterical lunatic. This is the same sort of "logic" that led groups of numpties to spread the word about the Harry Potter books encouraging Satanism. I find it very, very sad that people feel the need to talk that much bullshit, in order to protect themselves against their own inferiority complex.

Anyone who seriously believes that small children would incite violence after a bit of candy, is either an idiot, an extremely bad parent, or unfortunate enough to have a mentally ill child.

Those people, apart from the latter, need to get a grip on reality .

Get real, give it a rest, and start making a fuss about the really horrendous stuff that goes on in the world. Maybe it would be a far more important and productive idea to Woory about eradicating rape, murder, paedophilia, poverty, and all forms of cruelty to people AND other animals. I think that if someone is citing a piece of candy as a negative effect on society... well, that says a hell of alot b about their own petty, silly narrowmindedness.

Like I said I don't like the idea but I really don't think it's anything to start a huge protest over. How is this supposed to give the idea that it's OK to run over animals?
