Of Eyes and Evolution

Darwin said of the eye that natural selection producing such an organ "seems, I freely confess, absurd in the highest possible degree," ~ the oft used quotation to "prove" that Darwin advocated intelligent design or creationism.

That's not quite what I remember from reading "Origin of the Species". I thought Darwin's position was that evolution was logically independent of the existence of an active God.
