Because... wait... no, must be Australian/socialist ignorance, because I don't understand it either.

well, to put it simply, most republicans are paranoid and uneducated. of course not all of them, but it seems those that are afraid of universal healthcare fall into the category of being frightened more of government than anything...including insurance companies

I don't think this is a fair statement. I think many of the far right will fall into this category, many of the tea partiers will fall into this category, but this is a small % of the Republican Party. I think the Republican's biggest fault is not being able to see big picture. Conservatism is nice in theory; if we were all straight, Christian, born on a level playing ground it might work more often, but even then it would still have issues at times.

Come on guys, slinging around these kinds of caricatures--'conservatives' are like this, 'liberals' are like that--and getting into little tit-for-tat matches of who can dig up the biggest Outrage!!! quote aren't going to get us anywhere.

Some might say that liberalism is nice in theory. .

Yea I think my quote about republicans was a bit harsh. I guess it seems that the small ignorant percentage seems to be the vocal chords for the entire party unfortunately.

Liberalism, as I see it, doesnt really have a set theory like conservatism does. Liberalism changes with the time, situations, evidence, etc... there is no set theory for liberalism which is why it is so hard for politicians to define being liberal and so easy for conservatives to make their point with a few short words.

It is my suspicion that many people confuse "socialism" with "communism", thus the fear that word generates.

Agreed.

I live in NH, and I work in Portsmouth, which just happens to be where Obama is coming tomorrow.

The local paper was interviewing a local business owner who is a Republican that puts different political messages on his sign all the time, right down the street from where I work:

bilde

Protesters ready to deliver message at Obama town hall forum | SeacoastOnline.com

I particularly found this line amusing:

All my life I was taught that communism and socialism were what we were fighting against.

I love it, too. But I like to keep it fresh, so don't like to keep it in my signature all the time. ;)

Town hall meetings should be civil. People have legitamate questions and this is far too much of a serious issue for the protesters to be acting like babies throwing a tantrum when there is intelligent discussion to be had.

and then those people crying saying "I WANT MY COUNTRY BACK!"

What the fuck? What has honestly changed so drastically in their life that they feel their country has been taken from them  Perhaps the conservatives on the forum can enlighten me on this.

I take it you never saw some of the protesting going on outside the whitehouse during the Bush Administration. :hmm:

Wrong. I can't believe people still say this. If you honestly Bush was the worst in history, please take an American history course. Please. I beg you.

Any body who studies history will know that during his time Abraham Lincoln was the worst president we ever had and very much hated as well. Now I'm not putting W in the same league as Lincoln but I feel that history will be kinder to him than the current generation.

that's a simplification of how Lincoln was viewed in his time, and when the country was literally being torn apart by civil war, i hardly think the Lincoln comparisons are accurate.

still, i think Bush's standing will improve incrementally, if for no other reason than he has no place else to go but up, and certain historians will try to make a name for themselves by writing a headline-grabbing book rehabilitating whatever presidency -- we saw this with Truman, Nixon, etc.

the fact remains that Bush's policies were disastrous, both at home and abroad, and for the GOP as well as they are now a party for old Southern white straight christian men, and he presided over the sinking of an American city. he chose to govern from the base and sought to win over precisely 51% of the electorate and he inflamed and exploited whatever cultural tensions exist in the US for political expediency.

Holy Shit! You actually call yourself a U2 fan? This has got to be the dumbest post in the history all message boards. Let go of the hate man.

really?

go look at who votes GOP and who identifies as GOP in the post-Bush world.

nothing to do with hate and everything to do with shifting demographics and how most racial minorities do not vote GOP, and probably won't for a long time.

You gotta back this up with examples ok? So what your saying is that Mitt Romney is a southern Christian? He is white though.

I'm not so sure what was wrong with that statement, Bruce. Are you suggesting that the Katrina fiasco was unavoidable? Even U2 makes note of this in "The Saints Are Coming" video, where the National Guard should have been aiding those in a sinking New Orleans, instead of being stuck in the fucking desert.

Are you sure YOU'RE a U2 fan?

If you werent in such a rush to be the smart aleck that you are you would have seen that I used the word protest. Next Time I'll write bigger so you can see ok!

Mmm, I think you need to read what zooropop40 said a little bit better:

Not protests that happen on street corners organized by the internet, but actual places where you need a ticket to discuss issues with an elected official.

Calm down, friend, it's FYM.
