President Barack Obama will be on “The View” on July 29.

It’s the first time ever a sitting president has visited a daytime talk show.

Barbara Walters, who underwent heart valve replacement surgery in May, was scheduled to return to the program in September, but will be in the studio for this special show.

Walters said, “We are so pleased and honored that President Obama will be a guest on ‘The View.’ The President last appeared on the program in March 2008 while he was still a Senator, and First Lady Michelle Obama was a featured guest co-host in June 2008. This shows that both the President and First Lady feel that our show is an influential and important source of information and news.”

The interview will be taped a day earlier, and is slated to touch on such subjects as the economy, the Gulf oil spill, jobs, and family life inside the White House.

Anybody watch Obama on the View?

I'm watching it now on DVR.

He's very much a politician, but I find it hard to understand the animosity some people have towards him. He sounds quite reasonable, no?

Good questions from the hosts.

He's a very charming man

I think some people have such pre existing animosity that they aren't even willing to give him a chance. I haven't agreed with everything that he's said and done and I don't know that I'd even vote for him again (depends upon the alternatives). But I don't quite understand the animosity either. Much of it seems to be from notions of who he is that don't always match up with reality.

Weren't The View questions pretty much softballs from a favorable (other than EH) audience?

AP JUNEAU, Alaska — Sarah Palin is criticizing President Barack Obama for appearing on "The View."

The 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee said Thursday on Twitter that Obama has "no time" to visit the U.S.-Mexico border yet can chat on the ABC daytime talk show.

She says she plans to visit to what she calls the "porous" border "in the near future." She wasn't specific.

A White House spokesman didn't immediately offer comment.

The administration has taken steps to address the border security issue, including Obama's decision that will send 1,200 National Guard troops to the region this weekend.

Palin has taken shots at Obama before, including over his handling of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill and what she called his lack of executive experience before assuming the presidency.

Weren't The View questions pretty much softballs from a favorable (other than EH) audience?

I don't think so. They asked him about Afghanistan, about the economy. I thought they were good questions for the most part. To be honest I wasn't really impressed with Elisabeth Hasselback's questions about the "saved jobs." I think there ARE tough questions to ask the president, but it seems like the Right has dropped tough questions in favor of nonsense questions. Her (and others on the conservative camp) making a big issue out of "saved jobs" is silly. All saved jobs means is that the recession would have been a lot worse if it hadn't been for the bailouts/stimulus. Yes, we've lost jobs but we would have lost a lot more. And the Republican criticism of the stimulus is hypocritical because it's unlikely that McCain would have done anything very differently.

But I digress. I thought the questions (except for the silly pop culture ones--thank goodness, the President didn't know who Snooki is. I would have been worried then) were as good as they could be.

The Republican National Committee is taking aim at President Obama with a line of attack accusing the White House of spending a disproportionate amount of time talking about MTV hit reality show "Jersey Shore" when the issue of the economy should be taking center stage.

"Less GTL, More GDP Mr. President" is the message the RNC hurled at the Obama administration in a "research briefing" and video montage released by the organization on Friday.

Yes. The man should never talk about anything social(ism); just talk about fixing things. Because his words to the press will fix things right then, right now. Except if he does talk about the economy, they're just going to rail on him for being incorrect anyway.

The past two years has made me sick of the whole process.

Fucking morons indeed.

Another cheap shot.

:tsk:

The man doesn't even know who Snooki is--what more do they want?

I'm all for the Republicans encouraging Obama to speak solely about the issues. That's usually when he schools them (see: conference with Obama and Republicans).

Happy Birthday, Barack! You sexy bastard.

Do not be fooled by the American look of shades and baseball cap. He is an African socialist who hates freedom.

They should have had him eating some apple pie in the pic, too. That would make him more believable as an American. :tsk:

Rush Limbaugh said Friday that the media is allowing Michelle Obama to take a vacation as a form of reparations for "our slave past."

In discussing the lack of media outrage over the First Lady's trip to Spain — which isn't exactly true, — Limbaugh said that it stems from her race.

"As far as the media's concerned, Mrs. Obama deserves this," he said. "Look at the sordid past. Look at our slave past, look at the discriminatory past. It's only fair that people of color get their taste of the wealth of America too."

Limbaugh compared the First Lady's vacation to Nancy Reagan changing the china in the White House.

Material girl Michelle Obama is a modern-day Marie Antoinette on a glitzy Spanish vacation

Andrea Tantaros NY Daily News

Sacrifice is something that many Americans are becoming all too familiar with during this economic downturn. It was a key theme in President Obama's inaugural address to the nation, and he's referenced it numerous times when lecturing the country on how to get back on its feet.

But while most of the country is pinching pennies and downsizing summer sojourns - or forgoing them altogether - the Obamas don't seem to be heeding their own advice. While many of us are struggling, the First Lady is spending the next few days in a five-star hotel on the chic Costa del Sol in southern Spain with 40 of her "closest friends." According to CNN, the group is expected to occupy 60 to 70 rooms, more than a third of the lodgings at the 160-room resort. Not exactly what one would call cutting back in troubled times.

Reports are calling the lodgings of Obama's Spanish fiesta, the Hotel Villa Padierna in Marbella, "luxurious," "posh" and "a millionaires' playground." Estimated room rate per night? Up to a staggering $2,500. Method of transportation? Air Force Two.

To be clear, what the Obamas do with their money is one thing; what they do with ours is another. Transporting and housing the estimated 70 Secret Service agents who will flank the material girl will cost the taxpayers a pretty penny.

Perhaps it could be that the Obamas, who seem to fancy themselves more along the lines of international celebrities than actual leaders, espouse a different view of sacrifice. When Michelle Obama accompanied her husband to Copenhagen along with best buddy Oprah Winfrey, she billed the trip - an ultimately unsuccessful bid to bring the Olympics to Chicago - as follows: "As much of a sacrifice as people say this is for me or Oprah or the President to come for these few days, so many of you in this room have been working for years to bring this bid home."

A quick jaunt to Denmark is a sacrifice? What portraits in courage!

The Obama modus operandi is becoming clear. From lavish trips to Spain to reportedly flying Bo, the President's Portuguese water dog, on a separate aircraft to vacation with them in Maine, to a date night in New York City that perhaps cost nearly $100,000, their idea of austerity is really just the lap of luxury, at least for ordinary folks.

Incredibly, the Obamas have long portrayed themselves as precisely such commoners. Just this month, Obama told ABC the First Couple is "not that far removed from what most Americans are going through." And that "it was just a few years ago that we had high credit card balances, we had two kids, thinking about college. We had our own retirement accounts, wondering if we were going to be able to get enough assets in there."

If that's true, why not select a more appropriate destination like the California coast? The scenery is just as gorgeous as that of Spain, and instead of patronizing a foreign country they would be pumping money into an American economy that desperately needs it. Camp David wouldn't exactly be slumming it, either. A long weekend there would really send a message of responsibility, leadership and compassion. For a couple that has sharply criticized former President George W. Bush so widely, they could stand to follow his example for once and select a more low-key locale, as Bush regularly did in his Texas vacations.

Instead, Michelle Obama seems more like a modern-day Marie Antoinette - the French queen who spent extravagantly on clothes and jewels without a thought for her subjects' plight - than an average mother of two. While she's spent her time in the White House telling parents they should relieve their chubby kids' dependency on sugar and stressing the importance of an organic veggie garden, hopping a jet to Europe to meet with Spanish royalty isn't the visual the White House probably wants to project. Perhaps they've forgotten the damning image of John Kerry, on the eve of the 2004 election, windsurfing off the coast of Nantucket?

I don't begrudge anyone rest and relaxation when they work hard. We all need downtime - the First Family included. It's the extravagance of Michelle Obama's trip and glitzy destination contrasted with President Obama's demonization of the rich that smacks of hypocrisy and perpetuates a disconnect between the country and its leaders. Toning down the flash would humanize the Obamas and signify that they sympathize with the setbacks of the people they were elected to serve.

In January, President Obama insisted that "everybody in the country is going to have to sacrifice something, accept change for the greater good. Everybody is going to have to give. Everybody is going to have to have some skin in the game."

If sacrifice is the precursor to change, what will the family that ran on change offer up? Elitist doublespeak won't cut it.

what's that about there being no racism in the right wing agenda again?

Press wasn't allowed inside so unfortunately there's no video. I don't think any of those players are going to say he doesn't have game even if he doesn't.

Obama gets to test his game against hoops greats

By Michael D. Shear
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, August 9, 2010

Every hoops fan dreams of that one special birthday when his pro-ball heroes gather on a court to see if he's got game.

President Obama had that chance Sunday, assembling a virtual dream team of college and pro basketball players for a presidential pickup game in front of wounded veterans and participants in a White House mentoring program.

Obama, who turned 49 on Wednesday, took to the court for a game with a stunning list of all-stars, including Grant Hill, Shane Battier, Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Derek Fisher, LeBron James, Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Maya Moore, Alonzo Mourning, Chris Paul, Derrick Rose, Bill Russell, Etan Thomas, Dwyane Wade and David West. The game was closed to the media.

Kobe Bryant was there but didn't play, according to the White House, and aides provided no details about the game, which took place at Fort McNair in the District, where Obama often plays basketball with friends.

The presidential motorcade of black SUVs returned to the White House after about two hours for an evening barbecue on the South Lawn. Reporters could see grills being set up on the grass.

The White House provided few details about the festivities but confirmed that the president and his guests would be dining on shrimp harvested from the Gulf of Mexico.

Obama is known for throwing a few elbows on the court and for having a fierce determination to win. But the 6-foot-2 commander in chief had his work cut out for him. A number of the players were 6-8 or taller.

Obama was the nation's bachelor in chief this weekend. His wife and younger daughter returned from a brief vacation in Spain in time for the barbecue, and his elder daughter was at camp.

With his family away, Obama made it an all-sports-all-the-time weekend. He spent four hours at the Andrews Air Force Base golf course Saturday with longtime friends from Chicago and Hawaii, including Wahid Hamid, Laurent Delanney, Marvin Nicholson, Greg Orme, Bobby Titcomb, Michael Ramos, Marty Nesbitt and Eric Whitaker.

That crew was said to be attending the barbecue Sunday at the White House, as well. No word on how many of them joined in the hoops competition.

Basketball is undergoing a renaissance at the White House under Obama, who had a court built on what had been the presidential tennis courts. He plays with staff members and friends, including aide Reggie Love, who was on the NCAA-champion Duke team in 2001.

But in June 2009, when the basketball court was being built, the president told Bloomberg News that he was itching for some professional competition.

"As soon as we get the basketball nets up, we're going to have some of these guys over for a game," he said of pros such as James.

Asked by Bloomberg whether he would be playing, Obama said: "Of course. It's my court."

i still think the Dems are in trouble, but it's at least getting more interesting:

Barack Obama celebrates primary victories as Tea Party splits vote

Barack Obama and his Democratic allies have scored a series of victories in primary races while the Republican establishment has lost out to agitated Tea Party supporters, bolstering the president's hand in November's mid-term elections.

The results of primaries in four states on Tuesday will leave moderate Democrats facing Republicans who have been tainted by extreme views, or accusations of unethical conduct, in key races for the US Senate and state governorships. This should undermine the Republicans' attempts to retake control of Congress. "This is the best night the Democrats have had this year," said Larry Sabato, a political science professor at the University of Virginia. "They've improved their position in all four states and the Republicans weakened theirs. The Democrats couldn't have written a better script."

Crucially for Obama, Senator Michael Bennet won a clear victory for the Democratic nomination against Andrew Romanoff, who had Bill Clinton's backing and was billed as likely to draw strong support from discontented liberals. Obama had campaigned heavily for Bennet, who won by with a nine-point lead, so the result undermines claims that the president is a liability for candidates.

Bennet's prospects have been helped by the decision of Colorado Republican primary voters to elect Tea Party supporter Ken Buck as their candidate for Senate. Buck, who beat the Republican leadership's favoured candidate, is thought likely to alienate many independent voters.

The Republicans elected a candidate for governor of Colorado, Dan Maes, who is widely viewed as a liability to the party because of his extreme conservative views, including a claim that a bicycle sharing scheme in Denver is part of a United Nations plot to take over the city. Republican leaders backed an establishment candidate who was thought to have a better chance against the Democrats.

The Colorado races appear to show the anti-Washington sentiment said to have swept the country is working more against Republican insiders than Democrats.

"Colorado is the big one," said Sabato. "It has strengthened Obama's position. The Republicans turned down Jane Norton, who could have won the Senate race in November, for a Tea Party candidate, Ken Buck. The Republicans have also given it away on the governor."

The results of primaries in three other states – Connecticut, Georgia and Minnesota – also appeared to favour the Democrats in November.

In Connecticut, Linda McMahon, the former head of World Wrestling Entertainment, won the Republican nomination for the US senate to run against Democratic challenger Richard Blumenthal, who is accused of falsely claiming he served in Vietnam.

McMahon won after spending $20m of her own money.

"Connecticut Republicans today nominated a corporate CEO of WWE who, under her watch, violence was peddled to kids, steroid abuse was rampant, yet she made millions," said Robert Menendez, chairman of the Democrats' Senate campaign committee.

In Georgia, the Republican vote in the race for governor split after a vicious campaign between Nathan Deal, a former congressman who resigned amid allegations of corruption, and Karen Handel, who was portrayed as not conservative enough on issues such as abortion and same-sex marriage.

The Republican leadership favoured Handel but Deal won by a wafer-thin margin by portraying himself as anti-establishment despite being named by one watchdog as among the 15 most corrupt members of Congress. He resigned as a member of the House of Representatives this year after an ethics investigation concluded that he had improperly used his office to direct hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of state funds to his family's car salvaging business.

However, Sabato noted that despite the restless mood among some voters, and the influence of the Tea Party, establishment candidates will dominate November's races.

"The Tea Party candidates have undermined the Republicans in some states and districts but not in most," he said. "The renomination rate is 98%. Some of the Tea Party candidates will win but would it have been better for the Republicans to have mainstream candidates? Absolutely. No question about it."

American Thinker: A Shrink Asks: What's Wrong with Obama?

June 11, 2010
A Shrink Asks: What's Wrong with Obama?
By Robin of Berkeley

So what is the matter with Obama? Conservatives have been asking this question for some time. I've written a number of articles trying to solve the mystery.

Even some liberals are starting to wonder. James Carville railed about Obama's blasé attitude after the catastrophic oil spill. The New York Times' Maureen Dowd revamped Obama's "Yes We Can" motto into "Will We Ever?"

The liberal women of the TV show "The View" have expressed sympathy for Michelle Obama's living with a man so out of touch. Peggy Noonan, hardly a vehement Obama foe, recently pronounced him disconnected.

Obama's odd mannerisms intrigue a psychotherapist like me. He also presents a serious diagnostic challenge.

For one, Obama's teleprompter and the men behind the Blackberry keep him well-scripted. We know so little about the facts of his life.

But it's more than just a lack of information. Obama himself is a strange bird. He doesn't fit easily into any diagnostic category.

Many people attribute Obama's oddness to his narcissism. True, Obama has a gargantuan ego, and he is notoriously thin-skinned.

Yet a personality disorder like narcissism does not explain Obama's strangeness: his giggling while being asked about the economy; his continuing a shout-out rather than announcing the Ft. Hood shootings; or his vacations, golfing, partying and fundraising during the calamitous oil spill.

Take also Obama's declaring on the "Today Show" that he wants to know whose ass to kick. Consummate narcissists would never stoop to this vulgar display of adolescent machismo.

Obama is flat when passion is needed; he's aggressive when savvy is required. What's most worrisome is that Obama doesn't even realize that his behavior is inappropriate.

So if it's not just simple narcissism, what is wrong with Obama? Since I've never evaluated him, I can't say for sure. But I can hazard some educated guesses.

If I saw a client as disconnected as him, the first thing I would wonder: Is something wrong with his brain? And I'd consider the following theoretical diagnostic possibilities.

--Physical problems: There are a multitude of physiological conditions that can cause people to act strangely. For instance: head injuries, endocrine disturbances, epilepsy, and toxic chemical exposure.

It makes me wonder: Did Obama ever have a head injury? His stepfather in Indonesia was purportedly an alcoholic abuser. Was Obama subject to any physical abuse?

-- Drugs and alcohol: Damage to the brain from drugs and alcohol can also cause significant cognitive impairments. Obama once said that there were 57 states -- and didn't correct himself. Memory problems can be caused by both illicit and prescription drug use.

Obama admits to a history of drug use in his youth. Did his usage cause some damage? Does Obama still use?

--Asperger's Syndrome: Also known as high-functioning autism, Asperger's causes deficits in social skills. A person with Asperger's can't read social cues. Consequently, he can be insensitive and hurtful without even knowing it.

Could Obama have Asperger's? He might have some mild traits, but certainly not the full-blown disorder. In contrast to Obama, those with Asperger's get fixated on some behavior, like programming computers. Obama lacks this kind of passion and zeal.

--Mental Illness: Obama's family tree is replete with the unbalanced. His maternal great-grandmother committed suicide. His grandfather, Stanley Dunham, was particularly unhinged: He was expelled from high school for punching his principal; named his daughter Stanley because he wanted a boy; and exposed young Barry to not just drunken trash talk, but unrestricted visits with alleged pedophile Frank Marshall Davis (who might or might not be Obama's biological father). Barack Sr. was an abusive, alcoholic bigamist.

Since mental illness runs in the family, does Obama have any signs? Yes and no. No, he is not a schizophrenic babbling about Martians. But there are red flags for some other conditions.

While Obama doesn't appear to hallucinate, he seems to have delusions. His believing he has a Messiah-like special gift smacks of grandiose delusions. His externalizing all blame to conservatives, George W. Bush, or the "racist" bogeyman hints at persecutory delusions.

Along with a delusional disorder, Obama may fit for a mild psychotic disorder called schizotypal disorder. It may explain some of Obama's oddness.

People with schizotypal disorder hold bizarre beliefs, are suspicious and paranoid, and have inappropriate and constricted affect. They have few close friends and are socially awkward. A schizotypal is someone like your strange cousin Becky who is addicted to astrology, believes she is psychic, and is the oddball at social gatherings.

Schizotypal Disorder does ring some bells vis-à-vis Obama. One way the diagnosis doesn't fit, however, is that schizotypals are generally harmless, odd ducks. Not so with Obama.

--Trauma: My gut tells me that Obama was seriously traumatized in childhood. His mother disregarded his basic needs, dragged him all over the place, and ultimately abandoned him.

But I think there may be something even more insidious in his family background. While I can't prove it, the degree of Obama's disconnect reminds me of my sexually abused clients.

With serious sexual abuse, the brain chemistry may change. The child dissociates -- that is, disconnects from his being -- in order to cope. Many adult survivors still dissociate, from occasional trances to the most extreme cases of multiple personality disorder.

Apparently, young Barry was left in the care of Communist Frank Marshall Davis, who admitted to molesting a 13-year-old girl. As a teenager, Obama wrote a disturbing poem, "Pop," that evoked images of sexual abuse -- for instance, describing dual amber stains on both his and "Pop's" shorts.

Would trauma explain Obama's disconnect? In many ways, yes. A damaged and unattached child may develop a "false self." To compensate for the enormous deficits in identity and attachment, the child invents his own personality. For Obama, it may have been as a special, gifted person.

Let's return now to my original question: What is wrong with Obama? My guess is a great deal. The answer is complex and likely includes some combination of the above.

Along with the brain issues are personality disorders: narcissism, paranoia, passive-aggressiveness. There's even the possibility of the most destructive character defect of all, an antisocial personality. Untreated abuse can foster antisocial traits, especially among boys.

If my assessment is accurate, what does this mean?

It means that liberals need to wake up and spit out the Kool-Aid...and that conservatives should put aside differences, band together, and elect as many Republicans as possible.

Because Obama will not change. He will not learn from his mistakes. He will not grow and mature from on-the-job experience. In fact, over time, Obama will likely become a more ferocious version of who he is today.

Why? Because this is a damaged person. Obama's fate was sealed years ago growing up in his strange and poisonous family. Later on, his empty vessel was filled with the hateful bile of men like Rev. Wright and Bill Ayers.

Obama will not evolve; he will not rise to the occasion; he will not become the man he was meant to be. This is for one reason and one reason alone:

He is not capable of it.

FROM CNN's Jack Cafferty:

President Obama should drop Joe Biden and put Hillary Clinton on the ticket with him if he runs for re-election in 2012.

It's an idea that's getting lots of attention these days... despite the fact that the election is still more than two years away.

This all heated up after a piece on Politico.com this month by former Virginia Governor Douglas Wilder. He says as Secretary of State, Clinton has been nothing but a team player. Wilder says she's been tough and commanding when necessary... as well as graceful and diplomatic. He then compares her to Biden, who as Vice President has continued to make his infamous gaffes.

Wilder also points out that Clinton might be able to help the President win key voting blocs, like middle class Independents and working class voters.

Since the Wilder piece, the idea is popping up all over, from the pages of the Wall Street Journal to Time magazine, AOL's Politics Daily and The Daily Beast.

Some suggest Clinton and Biden should swap roles as Secretary of State and Vice President... while others argue that putting Clinton on the ticket will give Pres. Obama the best shot at re-election.

And then there's the whole notion of President Obama creating yet another historic ticket - with the first female vice president.

As for The White House - it quickly shot down this idea, insisting Joe Biden will continue to be a "trusted partner" for the president.

Of course, this could be a moot point if Mrs. Clinton decides to make another run at the top job.

President Obama should drop Joe Biden and put Hillary Clinton on the ticket with him if he runs for re-election in 2012.

I actually support this idea  Not that I don't like Biden, he's just seemed very ineffective.

When was the last time a President has done this?

I actually support this idea  Not that I don't like Biden, he's just seemed very ineffective.

Biden is a joke. I remember talking about him favourably before on the forum but that was before I realised he was a joke. The Democrats' answer to Dan Quayle.
