nuts vandalize church

Sunday four nuts broke into a Catholic church in a town close to my hometown, Birmingham, Alabama. They broke in during Mass. They screamed "this is idolatry" and "the end times are near". Then they grabbed the altar and overturned it. This altar is a cherished item because it comes from an older church. It was moved when two parishes combined. The vandals were arrested by the local police. It's madness. I take it that these people were the really Neanderthal type of fundamentalist Christians.

freedom of speech?

freedom of religion?

if they have accepted Christ as their lord and savior

Would it be immoral for them to let these people not be saved
without witnessing to them?

Did not Jesus go into a house of worship and do something similar
to people that were following the wrong clergy?

Fundamentalist Christians are scary. No respect for anyone elses beliefs.

I'm not sure that verte's characterization was incorrect.

http://www.ledger-enquirer.com/mld/l...l/12810756.htm

On one hand, I suspect that a literalist reading of the Bible could, theoretically, in some folks who are already for various reasons prone to acts of violence and destruction, aggravate violent tendencies. On the other, there's a danger in painting everyone who identifies as a fundamentalist Christian with this particular brush.

Note that I said "Neanderthal type of fundamentalist Christian" and not just simply "fundamentalist Christian". I don't think the average fundamentalist would do this sort of thing. They're nice people with better things to do. I know the pastor of that church, he taught me when I was a catechumen.

At least they got caught and there are plenty of eyewitnesses. That's the one good point.

They are nasty people, whatever else they claim to be.

Oh, how nice, you have a defined subset of "Fundamentalist Christian". Too bad that the news outlet does not identify their religion.

Right, I meant a particularly nutty brand of fundamentalist and not just any fundamentalist Christian. I apologize to any fundamentalist Christians here who were offended by the post, it's not meant for you. It's meant for people who commit vandalism and other stupid acts.

. Agreed.

verte, that really sucks about that church being vandalized . I hope those who go there regularly can manage to fix it back up quickly-sorry to hear this happened to them.

The news outlet did that, not me. I have fundamentalist Christians in my own family. They are Seventh-Day Adventists and are very nice. They'd never do such a thing.

i understand your rush to defend fundamentalist christians. being a member of an oft-persecuted, scapegoated minority, i can relate and i feel that impulse.

however, i wonder if then you couldn't take this same approach when people who are members of other minority groups -- blacks, women, jews, gays, and whatever else -- feel as if they are stereotyped and persecuted in big and small ways and that it isn't someone always playing the race card or manipulating their status as a minority for some kind of political, financial, or personal gain.
