New Nuclear Missiles X-43A and Topol M

A U.S. space agency jet has broken the air speed record for the second time this year. The unpiloted X-43A aircraft achieved nearly 10 times the speed of sound over the Pacific Ocean.

It could be a forerunner of faster military jets or lighter spacecraft that can carry more cargo in place of fuel.

"It's a first step forward, but the applications are potentially many,"said Mr. Rausch. "The Department of Defense is looking at missiles, long-range aircraft, things like that."

This was the last of three X-43A scramjet tests. The future of the technology is uncertain, but project manager Joel Sitz says its fate is now in the hands of government and industry officials.

President Vladimir Putin noted today, in a speech to the Russian military leadership, that Russia has been developing a new form of strategic weapon. Putin has affirmed Russia’s intention to do so on a number of occasions. Previous reports have suggested that the new weapon may consist of a hypersonic cruise missile or a hypersonic warhead for an existing missile, either of which could evade U.S. ballistic missile defenses. The United States yesterday tested the X-43 hypersonic system, reaching a new speed record of ten times the speed of sound.

Although Putin’s speech today added few details, it is nevertheless notable. Putin said that Russia “is not only conducting research and successfully testing new nuclear-missile systems. I am sure that … they will be put in service within the next few years and, what is more, they will be developments of the kind that other nuclear powers do not and will not have,” according to ITAR-Tass, Russia’s state news agency.

Huh.. Israel develops Jericho 3 with a range up until 6,500 km. North Korea an ICBM with up to 9,000 km. Iran the Shahab 6 with a range of 6,000 km.

All that "defense" money... just wondering how much poeple could be fed with that.

Add the new Palestinian memorial weapon to the list......

In memoriam: Fatah introduces new rocket, the 'Yasser-1'

GAZA CITY – The ruling Fatah movement has deployed a new rocket named after its late leader Yasser Arafat.

Palestinian sources said Fatah's military wing has named the rocket "Yasser-1." The sources said the rocket was an advanced model of the Al Aqsa-2 and has a range of 15 kilometers.

Abu Mohammed, an operative of Fatah's Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade told the Israeli daily Maariv that the Yasser-1 was developed by his group's engineering unit, Middle East Newsline reported. He said the new rocket was an enhancement of Al Aqsa and could strike Israeli communities near the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

"US ground-based interceptor missiles are being installed in Alaska and California primarily to defend against a limited attack by a rogue power such as North Korea.

The United States also has proposed a third interceptor site somewhere in Europe to expand coverage against missiles fired from the Middle East, though no decision has been made on where to locate it, said Rick Lehner, a spokesman for the US Missile Defense Agency."

Nice. Place it in a NATO country so we get the fallout.
