Moving In On Pat Robertson's Territory

Wrath of God behind Israel bird flu?

Quote:
JERUSALEM (Reuters) - An outbreak of deadly bird flu in Israel is God's punishment for calls in election ads to legalize gay marriages, according to Rabbi David Basri, a prominent sage preaching Kabbalah or Jewish mysticism.

"The Bible says that God punishes depravity first through plagues against animals and then in people," Basri said in a religious edict quoted by his son.

Basri said he hoped the deaths of hundreds of thousands of turkeys and chickens would help atone for what he called the sins of left-wing Israeli political parties, the son, Rabbi Yitzhak Basri, told Reuters, a week before a national election.

The bird flu outbreak stemmed from far-left political parties "strengthening and encouraging homosexuality," Rabbi Basri's son quoted him as saying.

Very sad and scary-and of course this kind of bizarre thinking isn't exclusive to Pat Robertson or to his brand of Christianity.

are we to besurprised at the insanity that pops out of the mouths of egomaniacal believers of all faiths that pretend to have answers to things that cannot be answered?

"Prominent sage" lol. I'm pretty sure this is the same Rabbi Basri who declared recently that gays and lesbians will be reincarnated as rabbits.

He's more Fred Phelps than Pat Robertson, I think.

And don't restrict this to religious beliefs. Some have suggested that things like Katrina are a result of our failure to address "global warming".

Sign Kyoto or die!

yes, but science is awfully more compelling an explanation for the increase in the strength of hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico due to increasing ocean temperatures than scripture is at explaining bird flu.

i think it's funny that you're even comparing the two!

and, yes, we ignore the environment at our own risk.

For me, the problem isn't religion, per se, it's fanatics who can't see beyond their own little perverted world.

Both Basri and his son are already under investigation by Israeli police over remarks he made about the establishment of a bilingual school for Jewish and Arab students in Jerusalem.

"The nation of Israel is pure and the Arabs are a nation of donkeys. They are an evil disaster, an evil devil, and a nasty affliction," allegedly told followers.

Hate speech is illegal in Israel, although gays and lesbians are not included in the law.

Basri is no stranger to attacks on gays. In 2004 he lashed out at gays on the eve of pride celebrations in Jerusalem.

"This is not a disease or a deviation, but a straight-out abomination. Even animals don't behave this way... There is no place in the Holy City for such a phenomenon," he said.
Animals, in fact, do "behave this way." But I'd expect such a delusional idiot wouldn't be well-read anyway.

When I read the title of this thread I thought nbcrusader was going to say he's moving to Virginia Beach...only 45 minutes from me!

Anyway...it all sounds a little to me but unfortunately nothing too new.

I'm tired of the world trying to justify nonsense all the time. And that's really what religion has turned into: organized nonsense.

I think the next time we have threads here wondering why Islam doesn't deal with its fanatics, perhaps we should ask why we don't deal with our own.

Well we're talking about someone who's under police investigation for hate speech here...it's not like he's some internationally admired Jewish role model or something.
