Former ABC News anchorman Peter Jennings became a member of the Order of Canada days before dying, a government spokesman said on Thursday.
The Canadian-born journalist, who died at home in New York on Sunday, won the honor upon the recommendation of an advisory council to Governor General Adrienne Clarkson, who represents Canada's head of state, Queen Elizabeth.
His joining formally took place when he sent a letter agreeing to accept the award, shortly before his death. The actual insignia will be presented later to a family member at a ceremony at the governor general's residence, Rideau Hall.
The award recognizes a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation.
Jennings, who died of lung cancer at age 67, took out U.S. citizenship in 2003, but retained his Canadian citizenship
