God clearly said several times in the Bible that he doesn't want idols and he will not accept people worshiping (kiss, pray to) statues of stone.
They're not idols. They are not seen as "gods." This is an old controversy that dates back over 1000 years.

[B]Why would you pray to virgin Mary when she was a mortal like you and me? Jesus said "No one comes to the Father if not through me" and he is one with the Father (Holy Trinity). Why would you pray to others (saints and virgins) when you can take matters directly with God?
Catholicism traditionally teaches that you cannot directly contact God. As such, priests and saints "intercede" to God on your behalf. Of course, this is muddled theology now, as Protestant philosophy on this subject has pervaded modern Catholicism.

Quote:
The Vatican has a lot of money and the Pope is being treated like a King. (Even though I respect and admire the way he has used this "power") I don't see how this coincides with Jesus' humble teachings to serve others and to give others your robe and your tunic.
You won't get much argument here from me. The Papacy into the Middle Ages onward became an imperial throne like any other worldly kingdom. It was also subject to the same gross corruption that plagued other kingdoms, and royalty controlled and made up most of the clergy. As such, the Vatican et al. is a result of its imperialist past. I do think such opulence has rotted their ability to relate to common society, and, as a result, I do think that Catholicism has little to no regard for anything its followers believe or want. They're the "kings"; we're the "subjects," as far as they're concerned.

Quote:
Also, when you confess yourselves you are told to pray a certain number of prayers, right? It seems odd that Catholics see prayer as a form of punishment.
"Penance" varies. And it's not a "punishment." It's a small gesture to show that you're truly sorry.

Quote:
When someone dies, Catholics go to mass for nine days to pray for their soul. Isn't that what Jesus died for? To cleanse our sins? To ensure and give us eternal life? What difference would it make to go to mass nine days?
I have never ever heard of this. Maybe this is a local custom.

Quote:
Martin Luther had plenty of reasons to begin the reform.
Looking at the corrupt imperial Vatican of the 1500s, yes, he did.

this news is a bit strange for me, since i am 1/2 irish and 1/2 italian (and 100% catholic), but when i turned 18, i stopped going to mass since i have a LOT of problems with the Catholic Church's beliefs and policy...

nevertheless, this news touches me deeply.

rest in peace...

May perhaps the saintest person in the world, rest in peace.

We will dearly miss him and will always remember you, Juan Pablo II.

I am incredibly sad.

I think we're all sad right now. It just shows what an impact he had.

He was a great man, what is good is that he´s no longer suffering, but I´m still sad .
