The very fact that the Pope is able to function the way he is, with all of his health problems, is just amazing to me. It's an inspiration to anyone with health problems. They don't have to interrupt your life.

Yes, I really do feel the pope is entering his final hours now. How sad that he has had so much suffering. I really hope he remains peaceful and as painfree as possible.

I've read a lot of negative things about the pope on another site and that makes e very sad. For people under 30, this is the only pope they have known. He is in a great deal of pain, and has been for a long time, and yet he has remained a powerful and influential figure. He has not given up and he's not letting illness beat him down. He continues working even in the final stages of his life. He has shown a great risiliance. Regardless of what you all personally think of his stance on things, he has really went out and met people all over the world and really touched their lives. Even my Dad, a man who isn't religous, still talks about seeing the pope in Drogheda. I personally think he is an iconic figure of the 20th century.

Pray for our beautiful pope! who lived as a christian in a communist, thus aetheist country for so many years. Pray also for all political prisoners of conscience who still live in these conditions throughout the world, especially Cuba!

no official confirmation but cnn is saying that reuters is reporting that Pope John Paul II has died. :(

RIP Pope John Paul II

I am not a Christian, nor of any other religion, and as such, the Pope has never really been an important figure in my life. However, he is a very important figure the lives of countless other people, and if/when he dies(cnn.com and msn.com say only that his condition has worsened, contrary to reports that he had already passed), they will be losing someone important to them, and that has to be respected. Death is always sad.

CNN is now reporting that the Vatican has denied that he died. I'm not Catholic, but I know many people who are and they're torn up about this and this back and forth crap isn't good for anyone.

He's not afraid to go, he knows he's got a first class pass to Heaven and he's looking forward to it

He knew it was his time and he didn't fear it. He knew he had a first class pass straight to Heaven and he was looking forward to it. No more pain, only glory now.

I don't think he's quite gone yet.

Vatican is denying it.

can we make seperate threads for those who want to discuss what JP2 has done over his time as pope and one for his weakening health.

some of us don't want to read people bash him while he's on his death bed...

You know it's interesting you bring this up. I also remember some people being terribly offended when Ronald Reagen died and some discussed his policies instead of merely hero worshipping him. When people I know (including my own parents) are dying or have died, I think about and discuss their lives -- the good, the bad, and the ugly. While some may think it is horrible to do this I think it is actually more of an honor to the person to reflect upon his or her entire life than to sweep the more difficult parts under the rug.

And if I do this with my own family members, I'm surely going to do it with people who have chosen to become public figures.

JP2 as security

When the time comes, I look forward to John Paul the Great escorting me into the "heart", "ellipse" or whatever at the Heavenly Arena to stand next to Jesus and Mary as we watch U2 take the stage following their opening act, The Beatles. That would be F*$#ING AWESOME!!!

Come on, nobody expected hero worship, but the posts that literally said they were glad he was dead and they hoped he was burning in hell, well, that's a bit extreme:|

Yeah - he's not dead yet (the Vatican has squashed these reports -- apparently they said he was flat-lining and the Vatican said the machine that detects that isn't even in the papal apartment). It sounds like it's coming soon, though.

Since I was just subtly told my news was not official in that forum, I'm wondering if anyone has heard on the radio if the Pope is dead. I just heard an LRC staff member say they announced it on the radio, but was it an error?

apparently reuters reported it earlier that he'd died, but there was never any official word from the vatican. now the vatican is denying that he's dead. so apparently he's still alive, but i think the end is near. he's definitely in a critical state.

I think his final hours are coming and that he has given himself in to the hands of God.

I am not a super religious person, but I am very sad... as a Catholic, I think that John Paul II transformed the way Catholicism was shared around the world. He traveled and met with as many people as he could. This was a new thing.

John Paul II, I hope that, from up there, you finally feel that you have made it to the end of the road. That now, after giving us so much, is your time to receive.

You were truly a Pope... truly the saintest person in the world.

God bless you.
