What a cop out, but I'm glad you've implicitly admitted you can't sustain this argument anymore.

(Btw there are people in my family who have diabetes and who don't have their supplies, etc. covered - they didn't get diabetes from being "fat asses"- it was an inherited genetic condition, they weren't overweight at all.. That's a stereotype too)

I know. The point was that if we're going to start debasing unpopular groups of people, we can debase common groups of white people too. How many people have put up a protest against Medicare filling prescriptions for Viagra? And that was my point.

I'm not opposed to anyone who wishes to carry on their cultural traditions as long as they abide by the law. But yes, English should be our official language. I don't care what Hillary thinks. I'm also opposed to those who get lenient sentences because they are ignorant of the law. The whole "cultural circumstances" has no place in our court system. Ignorance is not a defense.

I'm curious to know how much time you've spent in another country that doesn't speak your native language.

in the mid 19th century, there was a movement to make German the official language of the United States due to the huge influx of German-speaking immigrants into the midwest.

this is why we have no official language; one of the inherent characteristics of the united states is that it is dynamic, it's constantly changing, and constantly reflecting the culture and values of its near constant stream of immigrants. we speak english out of custom, not law, and i think the most anti-american thing we could do would be to ignore our greatest strength -- the country's ability to harness the talents and dreams of those who immigrate -- and start codifying into law essentialist notions of "american-ness."

we are not european. we are not a country bound together by common genetics, language, culture, and history. we are a country bound together by disparate people who believe that they can create who it is they want to become.

in 200 years, we might all be speaking Chinese.

so what?

what about native languages? there were nations here long before the "united states." it's a pity jesus wasn't on their side.

if english was good enough for jesus, it's good enough for the children of the united states.
