Blast rocks Tel Aviv market

At least four people have been killed and several wounded in an explosion in Tel Aviv's main open-air market.

Israeli security and medical sources say the explosion, whose cause is not immediately known, went off in the Hacarmel market in the centre of the Mediterranean coastal city.

An official for Magen David Adom, Israel's equivalent of the Red Cross, says there are numerous casualties.

Israel Radio has described it as a terrorist attack.

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - An explosion has rocked an open-air market in Tel Aviv, causing many casualties, according to the Magen David Adom ambulance service.

"There was a tremendous explosion at one of the stalls," a witness told Israel Radio on Monday. "I saw wounded."

The explosion occurred in the Carmel market in the centre of Tel Aviv, an ambulance spokesman said, adding: "There are many casualties."

There was no immediate official word on the cause of the explosion but Israel Radio described it as a terrorist attack.

My very deepest sympathies to the victims of this barbarity; those that have died, those that were injured and their families, may time itself wipe the obstacles away and put a true peace there to be taken by the brave.
