Suicide is a very difficult thing to pin down, by all logic people shouldn't do it but they do and there can be different reasons, for instance somebody with debilitating depression simply cannot bear to live with whatever they may be suffering with anymore but somebody else could just be tipped over the edge by a single traumatic event, personality plays into it. And in a somewhat temporally related matter those who crashed the planes into the towers commited suicide in a religious euphoria. Very different motivations and reasons all of which defy logic, there is probably some mechanism hard wired into us that will make us sacrifice our own lives to save another, now that would go way back in the evolutionary tree, fascinating.
Often people can be reached, but it is a question of who is there to do it for them. The best cure to this is love and often medication, but it is possible for people to be to far gone and just not have anybody there to look out for them.

what a horrible story! This is what I miss for being away for the weekend.
