It's probably similar in scope to an MLK thread here (I think you might have posted that too, actually). Just as MLK's quest for civil rights fed into the North's sense of superiority over the South, there's a similar sense of liberal superiority over conservatives. So, in that regard, we tacitly accept that conservatives are, more or less, uneducated, ignorant bigots, and the media plays into that archetype. I do not believe that the media is all that adventurous, frankly; it panders in the worst way. FOX News, rather than breaking archetypes, tends to make it even worse (something that I do not believe to be coincidental).

I would like to mention, though, that this latent homophobia in the Democratic Party is something I've noticed at least since the 2004 election, and it is, in part, why I have more contempt for the party than support. Unfortunately, for all the Democratic Party's flaws, the Republican Party not only shares them, but compounds them exponentially. As such, for me to vote for the GOP would essentially be a vote for me to make all our problems worse.

I think the underlying issue with me is that the press does not jump on bogotry in general. They look for the usual suspects - and damn it - if the usual suspect says or does anything remotely wrong, it is a HEADLINE.

It bothers me.

Dreadsox, as you're probably already aware, it has been claimed that the former New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison, whose politics were probably pro-Democrat and mildly left-leaning, was at least partially motivated by homophobia in pursuing his case against Clay Shaw who Garrison thought was in some way involved in the JFK assassination.
And I find Jim Garrison to be one of the LEAST credible people. No Surprise there.

and, ultimately, i am more concerned with the outing of Valerie Plame than i am with her rather scummy husband making some homophobic remarks.

i am less concerned with the fact that one of Obama's traveling entourage is a homophobic minister than i am with the fact that no otherb candidate has gone to these same black churches and called them out on their homophobia.

i know i can't ask for total consistency, but when faced with a group of people who talk about what a threat i am to children, it's not hard to figure out where the real threat is coming from, and we have evidence of genuine hatred-spoken-to-power in the form of legislation that makes conservative homophobia evidence of hate-in-action whereas Joe Wilson's stupid comments seem to be about as hateful as the looks he's going to get at the next DC fundraiser hosted by some Dupont Circle gay power couple.

i agree that casual homophobia is embedded in the language -- only only has to hear the interchangeability of "stupid" and "gay" on a playground to get this -- and i agree that it's pernicious, but this kind of language is not preventing kids in Florida from being adopted by loving same-sex couples.
