Kerry's Nest Egg

Dems question Kerry's campaign nest egg

Quote:
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democratic Party leaders said Wednesday they want to know why Sen. John Kerry ended his presidential campaign with more than $15 million in the bank, money that could have helped Democratic candidates across the country.

Some said he will be pressured to give the money to Democratic campaign committees rather than save it for a potential White House bid in 2008.
Did not spending this money in key states (Ohio/Florida) cost Kerry votes?

Is he getting a head start on a 2008 warchest?

Her certainly doesn't need the money (if I'm not mistaken, campaign funds may be kept by candidates once they leave public office).

Wow that's a lot of money, I thought he had to mortgage his house to make ends meet or was that only in the primaries?

That's quite a chunk of change. We'll see what happens.

I saw his speech last night on C-SPAN--pretty great.

Two advisers who have spoken to Kerry about the money said he likely will donate a substantial amount to Democratic committees and candidates for the 2005 contests and 2006 congressional midterm elections.

According to the two officials familiar with Kerry's account:

He has $16 million left from the primaries.

Some $4 million to $5 million of that will be transferred to a legal and compliance fund to help pay for the costs of fighting or resolving 16 Federal Election Commission complaints pending against Kerry. That legal fund already has $8 million.

Once the transfer is made and all primary season bills are paid, Kerry will have just shy of $10 million in his primary campaign account.

The rest of the money could be used to mount a bid for the presidency in 2008, but the advisers said that had nothing to do with saving the money.

Why didn't he use most of it? Didn't Gore's campaign complain that one of the possible reasons why they lost their 2000 election was b/c they ran out of money in the last month of the election? They couldn't make a last stand ad blitz...

Maybe he reserved some money for lawyers in case of a recount.
