Ok I'm jumping into this thread a wee bit late, however, I think its necessary to talk about the fact that it might well not matter who the Dems run in 2008 because if (and I believe there is a strong possibility for this) the GOP runs John McCain, no Democrat stands a chance. I could well see a McCain/Giuliani ticket for the GOP in 2008. and I shudder to think of it since as a native New Yorker, I know what a "horrendous" mayor Rudy was until 9/11.

U were sounding sensible until your boldface lies about Mayor RUDY and his against-all-odds, incredibly successful Administration prior to 9/11! Firstly, he was re-elected overwhelmingly in a huge landslide nearly four years!!!! prior to 9/11/01. RUDY! turned the city around, tourism was back and among many, many other factual accomplishments, he and the NYCPD under his leadership and motivation brought the all-time high crime rate (which everyone knew) under Dinkins down to the lowest it had been in over 30 years! RUDY! cleaned up and strengthened New York City to the deep extent that someohow we were ready for September 11th as much as that was possible, especially with all the emergency and municipal services at their best. I wouldn't worry about anyone "kicking his ASS". The murdering, destructive terrorists couldn't even succeed at that! Have a nice trip back to Ireland; see U next fall!

P.S. U are allegedly a "Native New Yorker" yet you're going back to Ireland!?

My two sisters have been living in New York since the '80's. They didn't like Giuliani throughout most of his term, although they did think he was brilliant and gutsy after 9/11. I actually don't know that much about New York politics because I've never lived there but obviously they have. They voted for Nader in 2000 while I voted for Gore, but we're pretty close in political philosophies. We're a bunch of flaming liberal artists.

There was a New York couple who were Irish, the guy by birth, the girl by parentage, and they got the hell out of a city they found very stressful and moved to a small town in County Clare. Yeah, they were stressed out New Yorkers who ended up happy small Irish town dwellers. It was challenging for them to live in County Clare but they didn't want to change anything.

You're right, Giuliani did reduce the crime rate which resulted in a rise in tourism. But, his infamous "crack-downs" caused hardship to a lot of people. For example, he "cracked down" on street vendors for crowding the sidewalks, and in the process trampled the livelihood of a lot of people, mainly immigrants. And of course there's the ever-comical example of the time the NYPD arrested a blind man for jaywalking during the crackdown on jaywalkers.
I guess it depends on what you prioritize in evaluating Rudy as mayor.

And PS, where does it say I'm "going back" to Ireland? I'm moving to Belfast, but it will be for the first time, not a return. I grew up on the Upper East Side, thank you!

Oh, Verte, this is 2-kool! Two of your sisters and me live in New York City!!!. Plus, two of my sisters!! Are both of yours in Manhattan, too? ("New York City" refers to all 5 boroughs such as Brooklyn.)

U know, my one sister, Tara -- all of us are native New Yorkers -- lived in Frisco and only moved to NYC after RUDY was in office for two years and the vast improvements (low crime and improved economy and more jobs) were everywhere. Before that, it wasn't safe enough for her here.

For U and your sisters, and anyone reading this who may not know, speaking of flaming liberals, RUDY was born and raised and lived into the 1980s as a Liberal Democrat. He was an ardent supporter of RFK for President. His articles on (Robert) Kennedy for President were published in major newspapers, I understand. In his run for mayor, he was endorsed by major Democrats. Most of his mayoral appointments were to Democrats. Most of his deputy mayors were Democrats. In fact, he was elected thanx to Democrats. [smile]

As a matter of fact, since its Thanksgiving weekend and U2D has already posted that she "agreed with Stonewall" on a couple of things, how about I show U all a swell picture of Mayor RUDY being kissed by a friend of mine -- a Transexual! How flaming liberal is that?! And he loved it as is quite obvious in the pic. In fact, the picture was taken on my camera (I have the negative in a 'lock box') although I am not the photographer. The location is Gracie Mansion when RUDY was the Republican Mayor in 1999 -- long before 9/11/01!

Yesss, I agree with U about McCain in 2008. The fact that he and RUDY are now (since 9/11/01) very close, I'm sure -- as U said and I believe -- that McCain would choose RUDY as his running mate. It would no doubt be an unbeatable team. They both have tremendous appeal -- besides to Republicans -- to Democrats and Independents and Liberals. Even KERRY would acknowledge that -- the main reason he wanted McCAIN as his V.P. running mate. Even CNN confirmed that interesting and well-circulated factual story.

Regarding your "thank U", you're welcome! I "sit corrected" about U "going back" to Ireland. My Mother (of 100% Irish ancestry) goes there every year. Perhaps, if there is one, your other half is Irish. Thanx for your post; it was nice. Ironically, I'm on the Upper East Side myself.

If hes does hes a selfish egotist. The same problems he faced against bush will rise again in 2008 by whoever his republican opponent will be. Kerry is weak and refuses to drive the point home when he has the chance. We need someone strong and sure footed to guarentee a democratic victory to get these closeminded, stubborn, greedy folks out of office.
