I went to a Spurs game this past season and they played Elevation during one of the timeouts, but then I went to a Mavericks game and they played Desire:scratch:, does that mean U2 supports both teams? Hell, what would they do when they played each other? This is just wrong!

I repeat, you do not need permission from U2, any of the members of U2, Paul McGuinness, Larry's cousin, any of the roadies, or any of Bono's alter egos to play a song unless you put it in a commerical, movie, or anything designed to make a profit. Do you think every sporting team, nightclub, or radio station has to ask the permission of the band to play one of their songs?

Thank you.

They play U2 songs over the PA in my grocery story, at the outdoor mall where I shop and in restaurants I eat in ALL the time. They play them on ESPN, during Dodger games, at street fairs and even during the surf report on the local news.

I think we have already established that jumping to misinformed conclusions is way more fun though

where I can find a translation from Kerry's speach?.. I missed the finale because of my mom...

well... Beautiful Day work things up

I watched CNN too... the producer was hillarious :lmao:

Sounds cool.

Is this "grocery story" available for purchase at my local Barnes & Noble? I'd like to check it out. Has anyone else read it?

BAW, I kid because I love.

As for Kerry, I think that its a little funny "On the road but you got not destination".

Oh Dave...if I didn't love you, I would seriously kick your ass

Okay people enough with the grocery store stuff. There is a big difference between having your song played randomly along with hundreds of others as background music on store muzak and using one song in particular in connection with a political candidate. Playing the song as part of the candidate's show, just like having your song played on a commercial, DOES denote endorsement of the 'product', be it an SUV, sinus medicine or a politician. IF the band did not support the candidate, or the product, they would ask the song not be used. Because this has not been done, and because Bono was even in attendance at the convention, it is very clear to me that the song does mean the band approves of this.

Other stars, such as Tom Petty and Bryan Adams, have asked their songs not be used by candidates they did not support. As possessive as U2 is over their songs and the images they project, they would not let a song be used if they were not in favor of the person and his campaign, I guarantee you that.

I don't know if playing it for a sports team means they support the team, I guess if it's only part of the intermission or time fillers duriing breaks in the game, or if it's shown in connection with the them itself, such as, "We Are Family" for the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates. I would say the context you are describing is more in the category of the muzak.

They are all politicians and they will be duplicitous bastards who know how the game is played, it doesnt matter if they are Democrat, Republican, Liberal Democrat, Labor, Green or Communist. To quote Nikita Kruschev "Politicians are the same all over." Never, ever forget that and most importantly never ever believe the hype.

Believe it or not folks, I really don't hold politicians in super-high esteem myself. I do feel obligated to cast votes, and to inform myself to cast the vote I feel is right. There are too many people around the globe who don't have votes and too many people who must put up with corrupt governments. I really feel for these people. They're terribly unlucky. But trust me there are people I respect more than I do any politician, like Bono! I think Bono wants a working relationship with Kerry the same way he does any other politician, Democrat or Republican. Bono is actually proud that he's able to work with politicians of both parties and all political persuasions. He's worked with Bill Frist, Jesse Helms, Mitch McConnell, and other noted Republicans. He has never complained about working with these people. I think it's great that he can work with these people. But, he's also got to work with Democrats to get the votes for aid to Africa. Like it or not, this includes Senator Kerry. The guy's got a vote. He wants a good relationship with him. This doesn't necessarily constitute an endorsement in my opinion. As an Irish citizen he can't even vote in our elections, so why would he be interested in endorsing anyone?

That would be hilarious, W waving and smiling to "Cat Scratch Fever"

LOL!!!
More than likely, they'll have the usual
squeaky clean "new country" music being played. That type of music makes me
want to puke. :)

Thanks Angela. I think it's important for Bono to work with all of the politicians, and so does he! I don't think he's asking anyone to like Senator Kerry. I do think he wants to be able to work with him. He doesn't have much choice here because Kerry is an elected official with a vote in the Senate, and he needs every vote he can get.

Gee. You think? I just don't understand - how is this a shock? Has there ever been a moment when you thought of Bono as a conservative? I mean really. Just because you wanted him to be one doesn't make it so - sorry. Where is this debate coming from? Bono (indeed, even U2) have always been liberal and will always be. Funny thing about growing up poor in Dublin, you generally don't become the most conservative person in the world. Wonder why....

You're quite right, U2 have always been liberals. This was noted by Republicans in the '80's. I don't think it's fair to hold Bono's liberal views against him. He's a bright guy and has reason to be a liberal. I wouldn't know what it's like to grow up working class in Dublin. Ireland is a much more prosperous country now than it used to be. In the '70's and '80's, it was in the grip of a nasty depression. Everyone was out of work, the country had a massive debt, and it was a real mess. There aren't that many people left in the U.S. who lived through the depression, but my parents were Depression babies, and that's how they got their political views, very strange ones, liberals in the very Republican Deep South. I personally grew up in a neighborhood that was full of racism, and the freaking Ku Klux Klan was having rallies up the street. I didn't like this. My parents didn't like it. It's only one person's experience, but it's mine. We all have different experiences to shape our views. That's fine. I wouldn't have it any other way. Otherwise our democracy wouldn't work, and we'd all hate that.

It's not a shock to me, but I still keep seeing people on this board who deny this and say it doesn't mean anything.

Not everyone who grows up poor becomes a leftist, I grew up in a bummy trailer park with high crime but I cannot accept or condone some of the views of the democrats.

I do not believe because one person is richer than another person they should have more of their money taken away and given to programs, some of which they might not support. If they'd give of their own free will, fantastic, but it's wrong for the government to take it away.

Interesting that B man seems to be a 'champagne socialist' considering as an Irish artist he pays no income taxes on his fortune (property taxes maybe, but not income taxes) and has, as far as we know, not given any of his own money to the causes he puts a guilt trip on us to give up the 'price of a cup of coffee' or a 'movie with your girlfriend' but he buys 14 million dollar apt. he rarely uses. Bill Gates has given a very large portion of his personal fortune to Africa, and Bono gives him no credit. Why?

My guesses:

a)he's a republican
b)he's the leader of microsoft, Bono prefers Imac
c) he's afraid people will start pressuring him to give his money too

Sorry!

So how, in your view, should a government tax its citizens? Not at all? After all we'd hate anyone to pay for programs they might not support, and it's not as though taxation pays for anything important like say, education or a police force or a transport infrastructure. Maybe since you say the rich shouldn't pay more than the poor, you think everyone should just pay the same amount of tax? Everyone pays ?2000 a year, regardless of whether they're on the poverty line or earning ?20m. We'll ignore the fact that that system wouldn't raise enough money to pay for the programs even the most ardent libertarian would agree are necessary. Still, leaving that aside, how fair is it that a family earning ?10000 a year pays 20% of their income in tax while our millionaire friend pays 0.01% of their income in tax? The family picking up ?10k a year can't afford to buy food for their kids, but at least the millionaire can afford a new private jet.

On a slightly different note, how far do you want to take the idea that people shouldn't pay for government programs they dislike? I don't like paying for a war I disagreed with, I resent subsidising the royal family and I'm not too thrilled with the money I pay in taxation being used to imprison innocent refugees. Should I be able to refuse to pay taxes because I don't like the way the government chose to spend my money?

Because we don't know how much money Bono has given, we can assume that he doesn't give any? What the hell kind of logic is that?

Also, Bono never giving props to Billy G.? One of the founding partners of DATA is the Gates Foundation.

Yeah I'll never understand that either. And how much of his time has he given over the years?

Assumptions

No, there are no 'assumptions', as much as we hear about every minute detail of their lives and business on these message boards and news sites, don't you think if it were true you'd have heard about it? Okay so post me the proof or you are only 'assuming' too.

Lots of celebrities go to great lengths to have their charity fundings private. And then there's many who go to great length's to show them off. So just because we don't know, doesn't mean a thing...so yes I think you are assuming too much. Until there's proof, I just don't think about it. He's done more for certain causes than most of our politicians.
