EU report: Muslims face 'Islamophobia' By BRIAN MURPHY, AP Religion Writer
Mon Dec 18, 7:50 AM ET

ATHENS, Greece - Muslims across Europe are confronting a rise in "Islamophobia" ranging from violent attacks to discrimination in job and housing markets, a wide-ranging European Union report indicated Monday.

The study, compiled by the European Monitoring Center on Racism and Xenophobia, urged European authorities to strengthen policies on integration. But it also noted that Muslims need to do more to counter negative perceptions driven by terrorism and upheavals such as the backlash to cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.

The 117-page survey details the many divides between the EU mainstream and the estimated 13 million Muslims — now at least 3.5 percent of the 25-nation bloc's population — and seeks to offer a street-level view of the complexities blocking efforts to bridge the differences.

"The disadvantaged position of Muslim minorities, evidence of a rise in Islamophobia and concern over processes of alienation and radicalization have triggered an intense debate in the European Union," said Beate Winkler, director of the Vienna-based group.

The report reinforces the growing urgency of tackling religious tensions and suspicions in Europe.

During a trip to Turkey earlier this month, Pope Benedict XVI appealed for greater understanding between Christianity and Islam and sought to ease Muslim outrage over his remarks in September that cited a medieval emperor speaking about violence and Muhammad's teachings.

Last week, British Prime Minister Tony Blair called tolerance one of the "essential values" of his nation and denounced "hatemongers, whatever their race, religion or creed."

The report cited hundreds of reported cases of violence or threats against Muslims in the EU since 2004, including vandalism against mosques and Islamic centers, abuse against women wearing Islamic headscarves and attacks, such as a Somali family in Denmark assaulted by a gang carrying baseball bats emblazoned with swastikas and racist slogans.

The report, however, noted that "data on religiously aggravated incidents is collected on a limited scale." It noted that only Britain publishes a hate-crime list that specifically identifies acts against Muslims.

"Muslims feel that acceptance by society is increasingly premised on 'assimilation' and the assumption that they should lose their Muslim identity," Winkler said. Since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, many Muslims feel "they have been put under a general suspicion of terrorism."

Islamophobic incidents shot up 500 percent in Britain in the weeks after the July 2005 bombings of London's transit system, but decreased dramatically after authorities and religious leaders worked together to ease tensions, Winkler said.

"The key word is 'respect,'" she said. "People need to feel respected and included."

The report urged EU nations to develop more clear legal frameworks for Muslim cultural and religious institutions, including ways to make more public funds available to Islamic community groups and help train local imams.

The report also said Europe's Muslims are "often disproportionately represented" in poor housing conditions, unemployment statistics and in lower education levels.

Do you think Imans and other religions accross europe should teach people that there is nothing to be frightened about and help them understand islam?

At least here in Germany we're afraid of everything, it's not even funny anymore.

It would be helpful if more Muslims stood up and openly demonstrated against the fundamentalism to show that not every Muslim supports that.
It's even been said by Muslims themselves, still nothing happened :(

People should educate themselves. Islamophobia is on the rise everwhere...

Read FYM much?
Boo hoo, people should be afraid just like they are of the Christian Right.

Deservedly so, the PR groups that push Islamophobia the hardest routinely work to and dismiss opposition on the basis of this "Islamophobia", I have seen Christians use "Christophobia" in the same manner. Now sicking a dog on a woman or beating up a Pakistani are obviously crimes but taking religious figures to task for expousing faith that discriminates against non-believers is legitimate dissent (it's the believers prerogative, but I think that if atheists, gays, feminists or jews, whoever, gets a bad rap from some of the faithful they should be allowed to fight back in print and protest - not violence).

One can oppose discrimination but still find the concept of "Islamophobia" a good thing and oppose carte blanche respect, treat religious literalists and conservatives the same way regardless of their fundamental untruth, in a way anything short is hypocrisy - of course if your a literalist Christian with reactionary tendencies who thinks Islams a pack of lies from a power hungry madman/showman your a hypocrite in many ways.

But not all followers of Islam are conservative fundamentalists.:eyebrow: That's why I'm confused by your generalization.

I think if you poll on the basis of attitudes towards homosexuality, women, sex and atheism mainstream Islam would probably line up with conservative Baptists. An artifact of the societies where Islam is practiced sure, but at least some component is in the belief system which proscribes so much of how to a person ought to live.

The supposedly mainstream Islamic groups like CAIR in the United States and representatives of the faith such as the 'grand mufti' of Australia Sheik al-Hilali hold rather conservative views in line with conservative Christian counterparts, the bar should be held the same, with even more scrutiny and criticism at those who do embrace violence.

Unless we have a public sphere where beliefs are being ripped to shreds and nuts exposed and mocked equally then it's not a truly free society. Offend everything, especially the sacred. Believers of the Book can have their COEXIST love in but if the history of these faiths has shown anything it's that theological deviants get punished by the order and it was only with the advent of the open society freedom of faith truly existed.

It's true that the most progressive Islamic society as per women's rights are concerned is Turkey, and it's that way because it's a secular state. Ataturk didn't much care for Islam. He drank raki in public.
