Is it ethical to patent food?

Is it improving yield or is it an instrument of control?

Monsanto wins fight over canola gene
Supreme Court rules for U.S. biotech giant in fight over patent

BY JULIAN BRANCH

SASKATOON - A Saskatchewan farmer has lost his legal battle with a U.S. biotech giant, but his supporters say they'll push to make the fight against genetically modified crops an election issue.

The Supreme Court of Canada sided with Monsanto today in the firm's lopsided patent fight against Percy Schmeiser.

The court ruled 5-4 that Monsanto holds a valid patent on a gene it inserted into canola plants to make them resistant to Roundup herbicide, and that Schmeiser infringed the patent by knowingly planting the Roundup Ready seeds. (Click here to see the court's decision.)

I don't like to see things that are so common tagged for possible lawsuits. It only makes life harder and more complicated for everyone.

I also don't like it that Disney claims copywrite on all the fairy tales they made movies of, even though the stories are centuries old and Disney's are not the only versions out there! I don't think you can OWN something that has belonged to so many different people in so many ways.

I tend to agree
