Iraq question

My mother was telling me about the stuff she's heard about Iraq and Saddam on the radio. They were talking about the Fertile Crescent and Mesopotamia, etc, etc, and they said that Saddam drained the marsh country where the people used to be able to irrigate their crops. Does anyone know any more about this? What a stupid thing to do.

Yes, he did drain the swamps. But last year the UN began a restoration project, and they're on their way to recovery.

Here's an article from 2002 describing Saddam's destruction of the marshes.

There is a special about the marsh draining on NWI. He drained to get to the gas below (ecoterrorism). Some are trying to restore it but some think it will not provide a sustainable life for those displaced.

Reminds me of forcing people to make their quota of bricks while giving them no straw.
