Acording some people this :Since the start of military operations, 2,928 U.S. service members have been injured as a result of hostile action, according to the Defense Department. Non-hostile injured numbered 434.

But acording this website, a lot more.

The unseen cost of the war in Iraq
Iraq

Published: 10-Feb-2004
By: Jonathan Miller

The true extent of US casualties in Iraq are still unknown. This has fuelled suspicion that the administration may be hiding the true human cost of the war and its aftermath. Channel Four News has been allowed a rare opportunity to meet some of America's wounded soldiers.

In a dark corner of Andrews Air Force base on the outskirts of Washington DC, America's war-wounded come home.

The human cost of humbling tyrants.

No ceremony, no big welcome.

More than 11,000 medical evacuees have come through Andrews in the past nine months, the Air Force says.

Most, we suspect, from Iraq. But that's 8,000 more than the Pentagon says have been wounded there.

Those numbers simply do not add up. Historically, looking at the ratio of killed in action to wounded in action, its an average of 1 to 4 or 1 to 5. The current figures for Iraq are about 1 to 7 based on the official figures. But if we were to believe the conspiricy theorist, then the ratio would be around 1 to 30.

#1 Those that claim numbers are higher have yet to produce any verifiable evidence to back up their claims.

#2 They would also have to explain a ratio of killed to wounded of 1 to 30 which is simply unheard of in the history of warfare.

#3 There are nearly 3 million Americans in the US Armed Forces, active and reserve, and they are stationed all over the world. Virtually all medical evacuees from oversees come through Andrew's Airforce base.

Naturally of course, those opposed to the war in Iraq would like to get their hands on a conspiracy of some type so they go fishing which is what Jonathan Miller has done. But by educating oneself on the history of combat and the ratio's of killed to wounded, one can see that the accusations have very little basis in reality. For there to be 11,000 wounded from the war in Iraq currently, you would have to have around 2,000 killed in action as well, and thats simply not the case at all. If anything, there is more of a basis to say that the Defense Department number of wounded is actually inflated.

Well, the reason on dutch television was.

The Pantagon does not count, Brain damage, traffic casualties and victims of friendly fire. Personaly i think the real figure of injured soldiers would be somewhere in the middle of 3000/11000, around 7000.
Both sides ( pro and anti war ) has reasons enough to fool around with the numbers.

The Pentagon does count those things, they just don't include it with hostile fire deaths or wounded.

"Mar 25, 12:25 AM (ET)

By The Associated Press

"As of Wednesday, March 24, 583 U.S. service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq a year ago, according to the Department of Defense. Of those, 394 died as a result of hostile action and 190 died of non-hostile causes, the department said."

"The British military has reported 58 deaths; Italy, 17; Spain, eight; Bulgaria, five; Ukraine, three; Thailand, two; Denmark, Estonia and Poland have reported one each.

"Since May 1, when President Bush declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 446 U.S. soldiers have died - 279 as a result of hostile action and 167 of non-hostile causes, according to the military."

"Since the start of military operations, 2,928 U.S. service members have been injured as a result of hostile action, according to the Defense Department. Non-hostile injured numbered 434."

Notice that deaths from non-hostile causes are 190 and non-hostile injured number 434.

Non-hostile deaths and injuries can include anything and happen to soldiers and civilians all over the world.

Last year in the United States, nearly 50,000 people were killed in car accidents. Over 10,000 were killed by guns. Military personal serving in the United States, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy and other places that are not war zones experience accidents as well.

The point here is that non-hostile deaths and injuries happen everywhere regardless of whether or not its a war zone.

The only relevent numbers in regards to how the situation in Iraq is going in regards to deaths and wounds are the deaths and wounds from hostile fire. Non-hostile deaths and wounds would happen regardless of where soldiers or civilians are located whether its Iraq, Germany or the United States etc.
