It's going to take a lot of work and a lot of time to turn such deeply ingrained misogyny around. And they're hardly the only society on this planet who treat their women this badly. :(

Alot of work and time? No joke. Other societies? Can you say "Saudi Arabia?" "Afghanistan?" "Pakistan?"

I saw a documentary on how treatment of women has plummetted since the invasion.
It's so sad how another human being can think so lowly of another. I hate it...makes me sick

Indeed it is...I've read it several times and gave my copy to another Interlander last summer.

I see that Islamic Society is working to its high human rights standards as usual (Sarcasm aside it breaks my heart to see this shit, but remember that honour killings happen all over the Islamic world including the most progressive Arab nation Jordan and they are either allowed of lightly punished by the state, Iraq may only be different because before it wasn't recorded by the Baathist regime).

I repeat Islamic society doesn't need reforms it needs a bloody rennaisance, industrial revolution and the experience of Two World Wars capped off with a suffragette movement and secularism before it can all change, there are plenty of good Muslims out there who are progressive however the society itself is stuck in the 7th Century, I will not absolve guilt on the basis that it is politically incorrect to say so. Talk tough and demand action, millions of people are suffering because of our indifference.

Isn't it ironic that this stuff has gotten at least more visible since Saddam's overthrow? I'm sure it happened before but the status of women in general in Iraq is plummeting. It's scary. Is this a freefall? Will it end with an Islamic theocracy demanding veils and women not leaving their homes without a male escort as in Saudi Arabia and other conservative Islamic countries? Will we have another Iran or God forbid another Taliban?
