Tell me how you feel about it, Indra. Do you find the thought gross?

What crosses the line is when discrimination starts happening, and this 12 year old saying it's gross is not discriminating...it's just stating her opinion that she thinks its gross.

I'm 23. I think homosexuality is gross but then again I have homosexual friends and would never discriminate against them. There's a huge difference.

too many people are way too pc.
I think you missed the point -- at least my point.

I don't care that little Viv thinks homosexuality is gross -- as others have pointed out most 12 year olds think ALL sex is gross. What I reacted to is that she was "asked to name the country's biggest problem" and homosexuality was her answer. Even a 12 year old should be able to see that there are FAR bigger problems than the type of sexual relations people are having. And I think that her parents are teaching her to become a bigot (not because she thinks it's gross, but because it's kind of obvious that she's being taught that it's the biggest problem in the country).

As far as Shart1780 is concerned...he too is allowed to think homosexual relations are gross. The problem with his statement is that he stated that "anyone who's not homosexual will find it gross" and that is simply NOT true. He's now backing off, currently saying that "most" men find it gross, but then he even screws that up by saying that if men say they don't find it gross they are lying. I can't quite figure out when Shart became omniscient....

And what I notice about the PC label is that people say "oh you're being so pc" when they can't back up their views.

Actually it isn't about your parents any longer.
But tolerance is about all things and people in general.
There comes a time when one has to change the things they can and learn to accept or at least, not judge, the things they cannot change.

Nope.

Not only do I not find the thought gross, I don't even find the act gross.

So put THAT in your pipe and smoke it, Shart1780!

Are you able to have the mindset of a 12 year old? Who are you so say this person shoud be able to see "that there are far bigger problems than the type of sexual relations.."

I'm a teacher. I teach grades 6-12. I teach the children in my class tolerance of all groups of people. BUT, 12 year olds DO NOT see the grand scheme of things in the world. It's called cognitive development. Children, which is what a 12 year old is, don't move to an abstract form of thinking for a couple of years yet. They are still in a a concrete state of mind. Things are right or wrong. Black and white. They are not able to see all ends. The may not see that "there are far bigger problems in the world." That all comes with cognitive development. Your reasoning just doesn't work here.

Honey, when I was twelve I was a freshman in high school and I'll tell you I knew there were far bigger issues in this country (any country, for that matter) than the manner in which people have sexual relations. I was a child, but I was able to think abstractly, thank you very much. I'm sorry to screw up your idea that 12 year olds only think concretely, but I was pondering then many of the issues I'm still pondering now. And I know several 8-13 year olds who do think abstractly (my niece is only 9 and yet is learning that not everyone believes the same things her parents do. And she's learning to decide for herself what is right, not merely to parrot her parents.

And I'm not blaming the kid, it's her parents I fault. She's clearly just parroting what they say.

You can say the same thing about the people working for civil rights in the 60's too.

Well, honey, you know nothing of congnitive development. Read about Piaget and other professionals who have basically written the books on the subject. Give me a break. I teach 12 year olds every day. They are so immature and "black and white" in their thinking it is honestly funny as an educator. That's what I need to break through, but I know that really can't happen till the students reach 14-15 years old. Freshman at age 12? What kind of school did you go to???? Most freshman are 15 years old. Students graduate as seniors at about age 18. Basically, you sound like someone who is trying to put a spin on your own recollections of being that age because you probably can't remember the mindset you were in then. Know several 8 year olds who can think abstractly? I would like you to find a study to back that up. Every educational professor I know would laugh if you said that. I would know, because as I am getting my masters in education we are talking about the subject of abstract/concrete thinking right now.

Those 8-13 year olds who think abstractly....are they not parroting what they hear from other people? Most likely. In class when kids talk about the election coming up they have these grand arguements...but it ALWAYS comes down to "my mom and dad said this..." And this all comes around to what I originally said. The parents have values in which they don't believe homosexuality is correct and that is perfectly within their rights to say so. The child is not at an age when they can think about things like this abstractly and see the bigger picture.
