The violence appeared to be in reprisal for anti-Christian violence Saturday in the mostly Muslim northern city of Maiduguri in which thousands of Muslims protesting caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad attacked Christians and burned churches, killing at least 18 people.

And thus the cycle of violence continues...

In countries where ethnoreligious tension already exists and both Muslims and non-Muslims account for substantial proportions of the population, this kind of incident is unfortunately likely to occur. People on both sides come to see their counterparts as extensions of perceived threats from outside rather than as innocent fellow citizens. I have been following the Indian press with interest (India has the world's second largest Muslim population) to see if any of the Muslim protests there, which so far have generally been quite subdued, should give rise to any interreligious violence. But Hindus are not generally associated with negative Western influence in the eyes of Indian Muslims, plus most Indians of whatever religious stripe supported Delhi's condemnation of the cartoons, so I don't think it likely.
