I don't know what is funnier: the book or the response to the book in FYM.

"Brainwashed simpletons"
"paranoia of the right"

Historically, many children's stories reflect political throught of the day. The author simply took stories from the news and turned it into a fictional tale. I guess the allegory hits too close to the mark.

if you went to the book's website, you'd see that the author herself thinks that conservative parents need to protect their children from some sort of onslaught of liberal books that are read to them in kindergarten (i suppose books about sharing are a bit socialist, if not downright communist). hence, paranoia.

the simpleton comment i won't defend.

have you seen the illustrations? there's no mistaking HRC and Ted Kennedy.

it's not imaginative enough to be allegory.

You sound like one of those evangelicals who won't let their kid read harry potter because they might become a Satanist.

Kids are smart enough to know that harry potter is make believe and a picture of ted keneddy under a bed is make believe as well.

In too simple posts, you've show this is not a problem about "brainwashing children". It is only bad if the "left" is portrayed in a bad light.

If you want to publish the book "Help Mom! There are conservatives peeking in my window!", I'd chuckle, roll my eyes, and be done with it.

I think the race to be outraged has lost perspective on the important things in life.

harry potter isn't real. ted kennedy is real.

no, i would never purchase this for a child; but i'm not going to stop someone from purchasing it. i also think the silly people who burn harry potter books are fools at best, but i think they have a right to do so.

However if you do decide to buy it you are a southern simpleton comparable to Hitler or Stalin whose children will grow up to hate them.

nope.

your first sentence doesn't make any sense. i could care less if there were a leftist equivalent, and i'd think it just as silly, but notice that there isn't one. why not? and what makes this book a bit different, and more sinister than your attempt to link this with typical children's literature, is the (not very good) caricaturing of contemporary politicans.

this thread isn't about the book, but more about what the book tells us about the author and the republican party. i know it's easier to think that people are outraged at the existence of the book; but if you take a closer look you'll see that most thoughtful posts are centered not around the portrayal of the left, but about how the book is meant to function (regardless of political agenda ... it just so happens that this is a right wing book, and thus, because books are cultural artifacts, it tells us something about the book's intended audience).

Yes, those aren't your words but they are words which other people have used to describe those who buy this book.

By NOT condemning those comments, you support them.

If someone on this forum called you the derogatory term starting with the letter F and I didn't defend you, I would be just as guilty as the person who actually called you the name.

i don't have the time to go through and personally condemn or condone each and every post. (though i have been smoking waaaay too much blue crack today)

to your point, a slur such as "faggot" would simply draw much more attention, and thus provoke much more of a reaction. however, i haven't heard what might be the equivalent -- "redneck," "cracker," etc. -- but i would object to those terms.
