An Iranian court has sentenced a teenage rape victim to death by hanging after she weepingly confessed that she had unintentionally killed a man who had tried to rape both her and her niece.

The state-run daily Etemaad reported on Saturday that 18-year-old Nazanin confessed to stabbing one of three men who had attacked the pair along with their boyfriends while they were spending some time in a park west of the Iranian capital in March 2005.

Nazanin, who was 17 years old at the time of the incident, said that after the three men started to throw stones at them, the two girls’ boyfriends quickly escaped on their motorbikes leaving the pair helpless.

She described how the three men pushed her and her 16-year-old niece Somayeh onto the ground and tried to rape them, and said that she took out a knife from her pocket and stabbed one of the men in the hand.

As the girls tried to escape, the men once again attacked them, and at this point, Nazanin said, she stabbed one of the men in the chest. The teenage girl, however, broke down in tears in court as she explained that she had no intention of killing the man but was merely defending herself and her younger niece from rape, the report said.

The court, however, issued on Tuesday a sentence for Nazanin to be hanged to death.

The law is an ass, sharia is :censored:

That's extremely terrible, but it didn't surprise me quite as much as this part did:

Nazanin, who was 17 years old at the time of the incident, said that after the three men started to throw stones at them, the two girls’ boyfriends quickly escaped on their motorbikes leaving the pair helpless.

What a couple of bastards. You'd think that they'd at least try to help their fucking girlfriends.

Everything about this article infuriates me.

Religious-based law is a bitch, isn't it?

But as for singling out Sharia law (which, I agree, is horrible), the Bible is little kinder:

"If a man comes upon a maiden that is not betrothed, takes her and has relations with her, and their deed is discovered, the man who had relations with her shall pay the girl's father fifty silver shekels and take her as his wife, because he has deflowered her. Moreover, he may not divorce her as long as he lives." - Deuteronomy 22:28-29

So I wonder where you'd get silver shekels today?

Melon

One generally singles out Sharia law in examples where somebody is sentenced under Sharia, when Biblical Law is Enacted im sure the world will get on the case much quicker.

A friend of mine who is from Morocco said that the laws over there are messed up and that you are not allowed to date and it's forbidden. You are only allowed to be married after your parents do a matchmaking thing.

This is why religon is a dangerous thing. John Lennon says it best in "Imagine" "Imagine a world with no religon." You dont need a religon to believe in God, I think.

That was self defense, Not intentional. There is a difference deeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Compared to what Tookie did or the person that is about to be executed planned it, to cause harm this girl didn't! I am sure you "Hate" me for my ways of thinking eh dave.

I believe that Pol Pot thought along the same lines too :|

Of course the issue here is that Islam is in so many ways more than a religion, there is never meant to be any state other than the religiously mandated one. At least with Christianity it was possible to render the Church impotent in affairs of state and create a barrier in governance and law.

The only way to protect humanity from all of these controls (state and religion) is by guaranteeing common law and indivisible rights.

If your doctrine is that all religion has to be abolished then there will be more than a little suffering when the revolution comes.

Freedom of religion is in my mind infinitely better than no religion.

When atheists get fanatical about enforcing their worldview upon the rest they are just as dangerous as theistic true believers. I say that as an atheist who enjoys the freedom to believe whatever I want to believe in a free society.

I am Catholic. I believe everyone has a freedom to believe in what they want to, but that line strikes a cord.
