WTF? how did being concerned with pedophilia and exploitation make the jump to "having their minds in the gutter".
I have so many problems with these images because I've seen the damage done by children being used.
Guess I've seen too much and lived too long.

People who see nothing wrong with explicit (or not so, but nearly) photos of children have led us to a world full of sex dens, slave trade and excursions to foriegn countries to have sex with children that have been sold and kidnapped.
Okay maybe I made a leap from this photo to sex trade, but I can't help it.
I see problems with this "anything goes- get your mind out of the gutter" attitude.
My mind never was in the gutter.
It's exasperating someimes.

Terrible picture! She looks dead. And I agree that it is way too early for her to be posing like this!

i find it interesting when people think that the sexualization of 15 year old girls is a modern phenomenon.

maybe using the sexuality of a 15 year old to sell magazines is relatively modern, but there's nothing new here.

No, people who are sexually attracted to children and are willing to rape them have led down that road.

Children are raped by family members and those with authority, I don't think that blame should be pinned on artists and the arguments here seem to lead down the road of censorship. This is not child porn, it is a separate issue and even though it may raise emotions high it should be approached for what it is.

But, I am not sure your school children in Saipan, with different backgrounds and cultures are the best gage.

I think if you asked them about many of the things that Miley Cyrus does
they and many people in Asian countries would not approve . [/B]

With all due respect, I don't think you have an accurate picture of the sophistication and "Westernization" of the kids who live out here. These kids are on myspace too.

I did do a little checking after my post

English is the 4th language

Catholic the no. 1 religion

so, I imagine being a U S territory and that your students are all fluent English speakers and Christian, they are similar to our American children in more ways than the Asian culture I suggested.

given the avarage age kids (and I use that word on purpose) start having sex nowadays I don't think a picture of a 15 year old with a bare back is what we should focus our worries on

I think this pic is quite poor and I think it's quite a stretch to call it art
still it resembles art more than child pornography

The parents should never have allowed their daughter to pose like that. That said, I am really tired of hearing everyone on every show all over the airwaves on TV channels around the world talking about it! If Miley Cyrus keeps up this kind of attention she's soon on a downhill spiral. Very sad.

I think it's a little creepy. Not a huge deal, but I'm not really comfortable with it. Old news though...I'm sure many of you remember the Brooke Shields pics from back in the day, and she was what, 13 I think?

more and more people today feel the need to make excuses for the same things that occured when they were kids.

in the 1950s kids played i'll show you mine if you show me yours. now they do it with their cell phones. nothing's really changed except for the technology.

in 1966 when a guy got ontop of a college clock tower and took out 16 people with a sniper rifle, it was because he had gone crazy. today it's because he played grand theft auto.

who knows. kids these days :shakesangryfist:

I agree. Actually, aside from looking dead, I think she also looks like she just had sex. Why was there a need for her to be backless and look like she just gave head or had a wild romp? She's only 15 for gods sake.

And then the other scandal is about the photos of her and her Dad, whether or not they're appropriate, for them to be laying on each other like that. I dont know if that was mentioned here I just skimmed through the thread.

I saw that pic also and even though someone mentioned she was sprawled across her dad's crotch, I didn't think it was that bad. Yes, she was leaning across him and they held hands but I've seen fathers interact with their daughters like that and I didn't immediately think anything was going on with them.
But it could be to intimate for some people to feel comfortable with I guess.

It seems to be blown way out of proportion. Is he was 16 would that be any better? Thats the age in alot of 'western' countries for kids to start having sex 'legally'.

I dunno - the picture doesn't really impress me, but alot of girls seem to be 'sexualised' at a young age these days. It isn't right, but it is just how it is.

At least she hasn't got crotch shots leaked on the net like the girl from High School Musical. Then again I think that girl (Vanessa?) is 18 or something.

The most problematic thing I can see with this picture isn't really the picture, but the context of it.

I'm really not that familiar with the whole Miley Cyrus phenomenon, but hasn't her career been spent marketing herself to a very, very young audience, like in the range or 6 or 7 to 12 year olds? If so, I can certainly understand the distaste with the photo, and parents of girls in this age group who have spent a considerable amount of money on her being somewhat pissed. There is a HUGE difference between this set of circumstances, and someone marketed to an older audience, like the High School Musical girl, and Brooke Shields, who was pretty much promoted to an older/adult audience since the beginning of her career.
