Not to drag this thread any more off the map, but I think the fall of the Axis powers at the end of the Second World War is just as significant as the fall of the Berlin wall.
1945 is when the era of dictators ended, at least in Europe (sort of). I suppose that was unifying insofar as it marked the end of totalitarianism as a 'respectable' ideology (notwithstanding the USSR and any number of African countries, plus Franco's Spain, which existed but were not exactly 'respected').
