i don't know how much of a dream it would be... i think he might actually be able to win.

Win the whole thing? Really?

I actually think that campaign could be the kind of showdown you probably need. No doubt (obviously, and especially in the south) he's currently campaigning far further to the right than he would be in a general election, but it would still be, I think, a 'good thing' if he won the nomination and stood ground on a lot of the shit he's been saying into the presidential campaign, and you had a very clear choice between the two very clearly, very different visions of what your country was/is/could be/will be. And that's with Obama sitting where you would expect - where he always has been, bang in the middle. And if Obama doesn't sit perfectly in the middle, but thinks "Fuck it guys, lets lob some stuff from the left" it gets perhaps even better in terms of a showdown, but obviously more risky for him (e.g. think about Obama making pro-same sex marriage, something he'll likely 'come around to' in a second term anyway, a campaign issue this year in the face of how Gingrich would handle the anti - in my view, couldn't ask for a better opportunity).

If the good people of the United States are given that choice, and the majority go with Gingrich, then I'm sorry, but I seem to have completely misjudged you. I would expect it would be an absolute bloodbath to Obama. And as some sort of ultimate referendum, it could be great. Nominate Romney, and especially if he then goes on to lose - then the right wing will just keep on keeping on, no doubt far, far worse too. They got shafted with Romney, then shafted with a second Obama term. They'll be ten times as livid and irrational as they are now. Give them the kind of nominee they want, spouting all the shit they want to hear, and then have him comprehensively - fairly, undeniably - renounced and destroyed... pretty good, no?

Plus, hugely entertaining for the non-American viewer. Obama v Romney risks being a hugely boring steady chess game about taxes and jobs (good luck to you and your economy, but... snoooze...). Obama v Gingrich would be fucking mad.

if Gingrich is the nominee Obama will win much bigger than in 2008, and the Dems will likely keep the Senate and possibly win back the house. Gingrich is toxic outside the heart of the GOP base, and the man most responsible for transforming the GOP into the party of racism resentment and revenge grievance.

all that said, if there were another economic collapse, another terrorist attack, or some other mass calamity that could be pinned on the president, then we would find ourselves in a much different world.

There are a couple of new polls now showing Newt up by 8-9 points. This is really too fantastic for words. Debate tonight will be high comedy.

i'm not saying i'd vote for him, and i'd be frightened for all of us if we had a president newt...

newt just dominated in a highly evangelical state the day after it came out that he wanted an open marriage with his second wife so that he could keep fucking his mistress.

he crushed the competition, and the moderators, in that debate. if he's able to do the same thing to obama, he could get a lot of the middle ground.

no, not the independents... the baby boomers sitting at home who are seeing their retirement funds shriveled away, aren't very political except always vote for the president... not stupid but don't follow this shit like it's their jobs like many of us do...

combine that with a very large "anyone but obama" vote from the republican base, and a lethargic turn out from those that put obama over the top 4 years ago, especially the young vote?

yea... i don't think it will happen, but i can see how it could. stranger things have happened.

the man's a cockroach. just when you think the fucker's dead and gone, he's sitting at 1600, and the rest of us are all scratching our heads wondering how the fuck it happened.

I was thinking this as well. I would think a Newt nomination would be a Democrat's best friend.

chris christie will pretty much spend the next 4 years trying not to fuck up.

So happy I will definitely never, ever, ever be in the running for any kind of public position. Mind you, our last Prime Minister, during his campaign to become PM, was hit with the 'revelation' that he'd not so long earlier spent a drunken night at a strip club in NYC. His defense? "I don't really remember any of it". For that, he went up in the polls and went on to win, so maybe in Australia I could definitely still have a crack.*

*Note thats "have a crack", not "have crack".

Little Steven has it all figured out

It's the Performance, Stupid!

Like most people out of work, I've been tuning in and out of the traveling comedy show called the Republican Primaries alternately amused, astounded, and appalled, like everybody else.

I finally watched the last three debates (numbers 104, 105, 106) from beginning to end and I have to say, I don't get it.

Virtually every pundit, every political operative, every journalist, left and right, all year, have agreed that Romney is the far more electable candidate.

South Carolina's already being dismissed as an impossible nightmare not in the script (did that casino guy get to John King?), because everybody knows the only guy who can beat Obama is Romney. That's who the Party Bosses have chosen, it's his turn, he's got the money, and that's that.

Excuse me, but I don't know who the hell they're talking about! This Romney character I'm seeing is the single most uncomfortable, unnatural, unelectable, phoniest, silliest, most unprepared candidate I've seen since, I don't know, Al Gore? Dan Quayle maybe?

I mean he could play the lead guy's role in Book Of Mormon on Broadway without a rehearsal.

THIS is the inevitable candidate?!?

First of all, I watch the pundits all day and I enjoy their wit and wisdom, their experience, their opinions. But surely, deep down, they must know that their constant discussions about the nuances of the issues is nothing more than an engaging way of filling up their obligatory hour?

I mean they don't really think it's the issues that decide whether someone gets elected in America or not, do they? Apart from Ron Paul's one single issue regarding the extremely impactful and not the least bit understood or discussed value of the dollar, which actually is important, there's not a politician of either stripe that has a clue about what a real issue is in this country. There's not an imagination or real vision in sight. And that includes our current president who should be arrested for his slanderous use of the word "transformation."

Forget all that nonsense you might have learned in the Political Science course you're probably still paying for. The person who wins the presidency in this country is one thing and one thing only: The Best Performer!

Politics is showbiz baby. Obviously. Just like the justice system. How could everybody have missed this?

Now, sure, these guys aren't in the same league as the best of the best, Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt (audio only), John Kennedy, Bill Clinton, and the Ultimate Manipulator, the King of Them All -- after all it was his previous profession -- Ronald Reagan! But of course it's all relative.

Newt Gingrich is so obviously the best performer of this historically wacky bunch, that I just don't get it. Maybe South Carolina will finally convince the deaf, dumb, and blind, but he's in a league of his own.

In fact it has to be the Democrats putting out the word that Romney is who they're most afraid of.

What a joke!

The Bosses think Newt has baggage? Not that it matters, but Bain is just the beginning. And wait 'till they get a load of the tax rate he paid. So far everybody's been too civilized to discuss Mexico, but it's coming. Does everybody think the Evangelicals actually understand the Mormon religion? Or that they're never going to find out? We can pretend we're above such prejudices, as we should be.

But we're not.

We've had how many Presidents that weren't some form of Protestant? Like... one? And he was a Catholic! Which is same damn thing with a few Saints and a bit more guilt!

And the Mob had to buy HIM into office!

But baggage doesn't matter.

Forget about Freddie Mac, the affairs, the congressional sanction, the Tiffany charge account, the Greek cruises, the hypocrisy with Clinton, etc., etc., etc. That's all yesterday's papers.

Newt is a Star. He's a Performer.

And in case you haven't noticed, Mitt ain't.

The role calls for the one thing Mitt will never be able to communicate-BE PISSED OFF!

Even Chris Christie, a performer destined for future greatness, can't help.

Newt can sell it.

So let's get on with the Gingrich/Santorum ticket and spare me the horror of even having to think about listening to Romney's used car salesman's sincerity for the rest of the year. Let's at least make it interesting.

It won't matter anyway. Obama's graduated to another level. He's literally singing and dancing.

They can't touch him. He's the best performer of them all.

Steven Van Zandt is an Actor, (Sopranos), and Musician (Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band). His latest project is "Lilyhammer," the first original programming from Netflix, debuting February 6, for which he is the Star, Co-Writer, and Executive Producer.

Newt is a terrible human being. I don't think he would win the young vote, much less women voters, or anyone who has paid the slightest bit of attention to him.

He is a smart man who is well versed in history, but he's also currently the cheerleader for the largest group of wing nuts and psychopaths this country has seen in our lifetime, the tea party.

They alone will completely fuck up the vote and force the independents and moderates to come out in large numbers for Obama, no matter how fucked up the economy is or how many times Barry plays golf, or Michelle and entourage takes one of their fabulous globetrotting vacation$ at our expense. Imho.

As i said before, if Newt wins the GOP nomination, i wont just vote for Obama i will fucking campaign for him.

LAKE JACKSON, Texas – The Ron Paul 2012 Presidential campaign released the following statement concerning TSA abuses like the ones that resulted in U.S. Sen. Rand Paul being inconvenienced at the Nashville, Tennessee airport. Below please find comments from Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX):

“The police state in this country is growing out of control. One of the ultimate embodiments of this is the TSA that gropes and grabs our children, our seniors, and our loved ones and neighbors with disabilities. The TSA does all of this while doing nothing to keep us safe.

“That is why my ‘Plan to Restore America,’ in additional to cutting $1 trillion dollars in federal spending in one year, eliminates the TSA.

“We must restore the freedom and respect for liberty that once made American the greatest nation in human history. I am deeply committed to doing that as President of the United States.”

presidents golf and take "fabulous globetrotting" vacations at "our" expense as well.

presidents golf and take "fabulous globetrotting" vacations at "our" expense as well.

i realize that....and this one is certainly no exception. I don't have a problem with the Potus or first family taking vacations though, anymore than i have a problem with a candidate for Potus who has a personal wealth of $250 million.

I suppose my comment was a bit sarcastic, went over some peoples' heads, or my delivery was a bit dry.

Also, you are cherry picking my post. Did you catch the part where i said i would campaign for Obama?

Mrs Garrison, do you really believe all these Sean Hannity talking points?

Why do you ask? I don't listen to Sean Hannity, is this his material? Or is it all fabrications because the Obama's have never taken a vacation?

Im curious...did you bother reading my entire post?

Vacations, Ayers, golf... This is what these talking heads are saying on a daily basis. I just didn't think anyone outside the nut job right even gave these a second thought. You don't seem like one of them, so I've found these points being sprinkled in your posts to be confusing.

This is so boring. Although Newt is getting mad so might pick up soon.

No idea what Ron Paul and Santorum are still doing on that stage. Really weird.

Newt is now pulling ahead in Florida. Seriously. I have no idea what people see in him. Hell, even my hardcore Republican mother can't stand him. To be fair, she really dislikes all of them, but still.

He's everything that the Tea Party would sell their collective souls to.:|

Not really, he is very much the establishment, he's publicly supported action on climate change, he's big government.
