HAYYYY YOU GUYSSS.

i mean this in all seriousness.

i was reminded of when i watched the Anderson Cooper special on the anti-sissy therapies in the 1970s that led to the suicide of Kirk Murphy.

there were interviews with George Rekers and Joseph Nicolosi, and both men set off my gaydar. and, well, Rekers was caught with a male escort, so that's pretty much confirmed.

as does Bachmann's husband. several friends of mine agreed.

sure, this might come off as tidy and convenient, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least that "experts" who believe in the effectiveness of reparation therapy or being "ex-gay" are themselves gay.

The Family Leader, an Iowa-based political group with the stated mission to promote Christian conservative social values, has been asking Republican candidates to sign a pledge titled “The Marriage Vow – A Declaration of Dependence upon Marriage and Family.” Rep. Michelle Bachmann recently signed the pledge, and now some are in uproar that she may also have agreed to ban pornography.

The actual pledge that she signed isn’t terribly surprising for a social conservative like Bachmann; it contains many platitudes like “marriage is between man and a woman.” Oh, and there are parts to the pledge that calls homosexuality a “choice,” which is then likened to bigamy, adultery and polyandry.

Writing for the Des Moines Register, William Petroski reports:

Presidential candidates who sign the pledge must agree to personal fidelity to his or her spouse, the appointment of “faithful constitutionalists” as judges, opposition to any redefinition of marriage, and prompt reform of uneconomic and anti-marriage aspects of welfare policy, tax policy and divorce law.

The Marriage Vow also outlines support for the legal advocacy for the federal Defense of Marriage Act, humane efforts to protect women and children, rejection of Sharia Islam, safeguards for all married and unmarried U.S. military service members, and commitment to downsizing government and the burden upon American families.

In addition, candidates are asked to recognize that “robust childrearing and reproduction is beneficial to U.S. demographic, economic, strategic and actuarial health and security.”

Alice Stewart, a Bachmann aide, said the congresswoman had no qualms about signing the Family Leader’s pledge. “She has been married for over 30 years and has a strong marriage and faith.”

ThinkProgress has noted that, in their esteem at least, the pledge also include a stipulation that bans pornography:

PORNOGRAPHY SHOULD BE BANNED: Vow 9 stipulates that the candidate must “support human protection of women and the innocent fruit of conjugal intimacy” and protect them from “seduction into promiscuity and all forms of pornography…and other types of coercion or stolen innocence.”

But the actual vow signed by Bachmann doesn’t explicitly call for a ban on pornography, per se. Read the vow portion below

The Candidate Vow:
Therefore, in any elected or appointed capacity by which I may have the honor of serving our fellow citizens in these United States, I the undersigned do hereby solemnly vow* to honor and to cherish, to defend and to uphold, the Institution of Marriage as only between one man and one woman. I vow* to do so through my:
–Personal fidelity to my spouse.
–Respect for the marital bonds of others.
–Official fidelity to the U.S. Constitution, supporting the elevation of none but faithful constitutionalists as judges or justices.
–Vigorous opposition to any redefinition of the Institution of Marriage – faithful monogamy between one man and one woman – through statutory-, bureaucratic-, or court-imposed recognition of intimate unions which are bigamous, polygamous, polyandrous, same-sex, etc.
–Recognition of the overwhelming statistical evidence that married people enjoy better health, better sex, longer lives, greater financial stability, and that children raised by a mother and a father together experience better learning, less addiction, less legal trouble, and less extramarital pregnancy.
–Support for prompt reform of uneconomic, anti-marriage aspects of welfare policy, tax policy, and marital/divorce law, and extended “second chance” or “cooling-off” periods for those seeking a “quickie divorce.”
–Earnest, bona fide legal advocacy for the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) at the federal and state levels.
–Steadfast embrace of a federal Marriage Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which protects the definition of marriage as
between one man and one woman in all of the United States.
–Humane protection of women and the innocent fruit of conjugal intimacy – our next generation of American children –
from human trafficking, sexual slavery, seduction into promiscuity, and all forms of pornography and prostitution,
infanticide, abortion and other types of coercion or stolen innocence.
–Support for the enactment of safeguards for all married and unmarried U.S. Military and National Guard personnel,
especially our combat troops, from inappropriate same-gender or opposite-gender sexual harassment, adultery or intrusively intimate commingling among attracteds (restrooms, showers, barracks, tents, etc.); plus prompt termination of military policymakers who would expose American wives and daughters to rape or sexual harassment, torture, enslavement or sexual leveraging by the enemy in forward combat roles.
–Rejection of Sharia Islam and all other anti-woman, anti-human rights forms of totalitarian control.1
–Recognition that robust childbearing and reproduction is beneficial to U.S. demographic, economic, strategic and actuarial
health and security.
–Commitment to downsizing government and the enormous burden upon American families of the USA‟s $14.3 trillion
public debt, its $77 trillion in unfunded liabilities, its $1.5 trillion federal deficit, and its $3.5 trillion federal budget.
–Fierce defense of the First Amendment‟s rights of Religious Liberty and Freedom of Speech22, especially against the
intolerance of any who would undermine law-abiding American citizens and institutions of faith and conscience for their adherence to, and defense of, faithful heterosexual monogamy.

Michele Bachmann-Signed Pledge Says Black Children Worse Off Under Obama Than During Slavery

"Right at the top of page one is the paragraph that insists that black children born into slavery had a better shot at two-parent glory than those born under President Obama’s watch: (asterisk mine)

Slavery had a disastrous impact on African-American families, yet sadly a child born into slavery in 1860 was more likely to be raised by his mother and father in a two-parent household* than was an African American baby born after the election of the USA’s first African-American President.

*except the ones that were whipped to death by their parents’ owners

The study that they cite was published in 2005, which means that any comparison to slavery must be made, not with our first black president, but with our 43rd white one. Furthermore, the data in the study only dates back to 1880, which means they not only had to stretch their pretzel to include Barack Obama, but also to conflate the data with slavery. They appear to be basing their conclusion on these two points from the study:

…in 1880 and 1910 about 56.3 percent of Black and 66.9 percent of White households were nuclear households…(page 8)

According to the latest data, only 35 percent of Black children live with married parents whereas 76 percent of White children do. (page 9)

Any nuclear households in 1880 would have contained exactly zero children “born into slavery in 1860,” or out of slavery, because they would all have been 20 years old by then. This is important, because it demonstrates a specific intent, not just to make a revoltingly stupid comparison between the slave era and the present day (black homelessness was probably lower in slave states, too), but to tie that comparison to our first black president."

And he's smart to just ignore Iowa. It's sad but my state is going to become less and less vocal/important in the race for the nomination.

2008 McCain skipped out and he still got it, proving that Iowa has lost a bit of it's zeal over the years.

And with stupid shit like that proposal above, we'll become even more of a joke. I liked it better when we were just known for corn and fat people. Now we're known for corn and fat people who hate gays and colored skin

We're fighting very hard to get rid of it (voting out three judges last election). Sad, used to think we were a fairly progressive state, but maybe it's just dsm that's more progressive and republicans are playing off of the rural communities more

The issue of whether the Bachmanns use religious-based counseling in an effort to eradicate homosexuality in patients has dogged them for years. Marcus Bachmann has denied engaging in such efforts in the past.
The ABC News report, which followed a similar story in The Nation, tracks the experience of another patient who went undercover at the Bachmann clinic in Lake Elmo, Minn. John Becker, a gay activist, writes that it became clear to him in several sessions that therapists at the clinic believe they can change a person’s sexual orientation.
“Based on my experiences at Bachmann & Associates, there can no longer be any doubt that Marcus Bachmann’s state- and federally-funded clinic endorses and practices reparative therapy aimed at changing a gay person’s sexual orientation, despite the fact that such “therapy” is widely discredited by the scientific and medical communities,” Becker wrote.

Michele Bachmann under fire for 'gay therapy,' police reports, IRS work - latimes.com

If all this is true, then Michele Bachmann is a danger to American society. Its because of anti-gay attitudes like hers that lead to many gays to be depressed, be disowned by their families, and even end their lives.

I saw some of that ABC report. If her husband believes all that and she has taken that pledge to him well she probably believes it too.

I don't want a President who believes in that

No, it sets our progress back several decades.

I think the way they both behave, they are closet homosexuals themselves and really really struggle with coming to terms with it.

Not to go into stereotype, but her husband would strike me as gay. that video jsut didn't come off as someone who's hetero....but wrong for me to judge.

And as bat shit crazy as Michelle is, I get the impression she's that way because she truly isn't comfortable being herself.

She will win Iowa, but will lose New Hampshire. So it'll be up to South Carolina to crush her campaign. Though if Rick Perry joins in, I think he's the front runner and he's about as scary as Michelle.

Is it too late to blow up this country and start over?

that's the GOP plan:

McConnell: no real deficit deal until Obama is gone

By
Corbett B. Daly, Brian Montopoli

The Senate's top Republican said Tuesday that he did not see a way for Republicans and Democrats to come to agreement on meaningful deficit reduction as long as President Obama remains in office.

"After years of discussions and months of negotiations, I have little question that as long as this president is in the Oval Office, a real solution is probably unattainable," Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said in remarks on the Senate floor.

The remarks come as negotiations between Republicans and Democrats intensify on long-term deficit reduction ahead of a looming deadline on how much the United States can legally borrow.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and many economists have warned of economic catastrophe if the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling is not raised before August 2.

And lawmakers from both parties want to use the threat of that deadline to work out a broader package on long-term deficit reduction. Republicans are looking to cut trillions of dollars in federal spending, while Democrats are pushing for a more "balanced approach," which would include both spending cuts and higher revenue to the government.

McConnell suggested in his remarks that the debt ceiling will still be raised, but without a broader deal on long-term deficit reduction.

"The president has presented us with three choices: smoke and mirrors, tax hikes, or default. Republicans choose none of the above. I had hoped to do good, but I refuse to do harm. So Republicans will choose a path that actually reflects the will of the people, which is to do the responsible thing and ensure that the government doesn't default on its obligations," he said.

The Senate Republican leader is not the only member of his party ratcheting up the rhetoric Tuesday. Speaking of Mr. Obama, House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio said "the debt limit increase is his problem."

"And I think it's time for him to lead by putting his plan on the table," he continued. "Something that the Congress can pass."

Republicans have walked away from negotiations led by Mr. Obama to reach a $4 trillion deficit reduction deal over ten years, saying a smaller deal -- for perhaps $2 trillion -- is more feasible.

nihilism.

let the people suffer. it works for us politically.

I read that Obama and Boehner had a deal of sorts and that Cantor nixed it. So wtf is going on?

It makes me sick that they are willing to f this country just to play their political games. What do they care, they'll all keep on getting their checks.

And cushy corporate jobs/consulting/speech circuit/etc. after.

It has not helped my view of the U.S. being in Canada for the last week.

i am gay and my gaydar went PING! or, rather, HAAA-AAAY!

but, in all seriousness, "gaydar" is a kind of subtle thing, and it's not about effeminacy.

it should also come to no surprise that the strongest proponents of the "ex-gay" movement are the ones who most desperately need wish for it to be true.

(AP) DES MOINES, Iowa -- Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's campaign said Tuesday that he will not sign a conservative Iowa Christian group's far-reaching pledge opposing gay marriage, making him the first Republican presidential candidate to reject it.

Two of Romney's rivals for the Republican nomination, Minnesota Rep. Michelle Bachmann and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, have signed the The Family Leader's 14-point pledge, which calls on the candidates to denounce same-sex marriage rights, pornography, same-sex military accommodations and forms of Islamic law.

When it was first circulated last week, the introduction to the pledge stated that African American children were more likely to be raised in two-parent households when they were born into slavery than they are today. The group struck that language and apologized after black ministers complained, but it said it stands by the rest of the document.

Andrea Saul, a spokeswoman for Romney, told The Associated Press in a written statement Tuesday that Romney "strongly supports traditional marriage," but that the oath "contained references and provisions that were undignified and inappropriate for a presidential campaign."

more backbone* than any other "serious" GOP candidate I can recall

* of course Anthony Weiner gets the award for most frontbone.

So if Bachmann wins the GOP Nominee, will the Republican party position the election as "If you vote against Michelle, you hate women"?

we all know i hate women, but i don't want to speak for all Democrats.

these conversations are so good to have. and here's why:

Gaydar is for real:

Nicholas Rule and Nalini Ambady from Tufts University perused online dating sites and carefully selected 45 straight male faces and 45 gay male faces. All of these photos were matched for orientation (only faces shown looking forward were used) and facial alterations (none of the images contained jewelry, glasses or facial hair). To control for context, the faces were also cut and pasted onto a white background for the study. These 90 faces were then shown to 90 participants in random order, who were asked simply to judge the target's "probable sexual orientation" (gay or straight) by pressing a button. Surprisingly, all participants (both men and women) scored above chance on this gaydar task, correctly identifying the gay faces. Even more surprisingly, accuracy rate was just as good when the images were exposed at a rapid rate of only 50 milliseconds, which offered participants no opportunity to consciously process the photo....

Furthermore, in an even more rigorously controlled series of experiments published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Rule and his colleagues replicated their discovery that people are able to accurately guess male sexual orientation. This time, the researchers demonstrated that perceivers were able to do this even when they were shown only individual features of the target's face. For example, when shown only the eye region ("without brows and cropped to the outer canthi so that not even "crow's-feet" were visible"), perceivers were amazingly still able to accurately identify a man as being gay.

You know, people had gaydar back in the bad old days—back before gay people started coming out and living openly—but Marcus Bachmann would've gotten a pass. He would've gotten multiple passes: a pass for the way he looks, for the way he speaks, the way walks, the way he dances. Being a homosexual used to be considered so vile, disgusting, and immoral—so criminal—that a man like Marcus Bachmann had to be given the benefit of every doubt. Being gay was literally the worst thing you could think about a person. So straight people went out of their way to avoid thinking it. Even when evidence of a man's gayness was on conspicuous display, straight people would refuse to see it. Which explains why millions of blue-haired old ladies went to their graves convinced that Liberace was straight.

Times have changed.

Straight people haven't just gotten used to gay people—to openly gay people—they've come to the realization that they prefer openly gay people to lying closet cases. They would rather have a beer with an honest Cam than a glass of champagne with a lying Liberace. And that's why Marcus Bachmann is being ridiculed: it's not because he's perceived to gay—it's not because he pings on everyone's gaydar save Michele's—it's because he's perceived to be dishonest. He appears to be a lying closet case, a lying closet case who's made convincing other gay people to join him in the closet his life's work. And straight people don't like being lied to.

Not anymore.

the more we see how impossible it is for people to truly hide their sexual orientation, and the pathetic-ness of the lengths to which people go to try to be anything other than gay. it's deeply sad, and yet also deeply reprehensible.

if his clinic practiced "ex-gay" "therapy," he should be in jail.

I think it is likely the (straight) men that work with struggling gay youths may have gay issues.

Why would they feel they are qualified? Because they can hug and comfort these young men and tell them I used to be gay too. I no longer have any gay sex, I just meet young men and offer them love, understanding and firm support.

I am not hetero-sexual, but I would love to council young wayward promiscuous girls, 18 years old and up of course. I could hug, and comfort and offer them accommodations and listen to them talk about their sexual desires. Just the decent (Christian)* thing to do.
