Exactly what I was going to say.

I'm moving to China in a few months, and so the last year I've been pretty obsessed with researching and understanding the Chinese mind. My conclusion is an echo of many here, that the desire for "freedom" has to come from within, specifically the growing middle class. These people are getting personal income and opportunity for the first time in 60 years, and the ramifications of that will be unpredictable to say the least.

The google issue is beside the point. China is big business, and if you want to play in China, you have to play by their rules. But get a foot in the door first and then you can start changing things. You can't demand your ideology from the get-go with a country like China. Baby steps.
